The last I heard, it was the 21st century. Only 2 more centuries and Mr. Spock will serve on the Starship Enterprise.
I think that the thing of it is, that, parents, as they have for millenia, have "been there, done that" and therefore have more experience and, hopefully, knowledge of life and what is good/bad.
Then there is the other part, the "empty nest syndrome", wherein parents feel empty without their nestlings...

21st century.
Parents try to steer kids. Some are controlling and want to tell them.
Some come from a culture where their future is decided for them by their parents (India). I think this is a culture feature that should be eliminated when they come to this country to live as it becomes terribly exploitive and abusive to women. I saw it amongst Portguese immigrants in MA where parents would receive money to marry their 14 year old daughter off to some 28 year old guy so he could come to this country. The parents should have been arrested, jailed and then deported for child slavery, IMHO.

I control my kids life totally.
When he is 18 and out on his own he can do whatever he wants. Till then, he does what he is told. Thats the problem today. Parents are afraid of doing the right thing and keeping thier kids in check. I always know where he is, what he is doing and who he is with. If you do not do this, you will have nothing but problems.

No, parents do not decide the love life of their children (although sometimes I'd like to). Actually my 7 yr old is on a kick right now asking if I'll find her someone to marry. lol. She don't see to get that she's only 7 and has several years to go.lol

21st - hence the name parents - If you're under 18 and reside in the U.S. yes to a great extent they do. If you are a tween and think you know best see an attorney and you can be "freed." By the way, can you take care of yourself financially? If so make it happen. If not, ride it out.

We as parents, atleast i as a parent, won't decide on my sons love life but I will try to encourage them to pick woman that will treat them right but in all reality our kids will all pick who they want and the more parents try to fight it the more likely it is to happen.

um...i am living in the 21st century....parents dont necessarily decide, but i am sure they have some type of influence in their childrens decisions.....
If my son was going to date a woman i didnt like for reason such as: she treated him badly, used him, etc...then i would have a chat w/ him but other than that i can not decide for him, he must choose himself....
