I can be a wine snob.

What I am snobby about is not the pairing. The "red with red meat and white with white meat" does not hold up. A true wine snob would able to pair food much better, choosing a very specific dish to a very specific wine of a specific vintage. While I love certain wine with certain type of food, I am not that picky.

What I am snobby about is the glassware and the quality of wine. When I host my wine tasting dinner, all of the veteran attendees bring their own wine glasses, and we have some very nice wine glasses such as Reidel and Spiegalo. We do not compromise on our wine glasses because a well made wine glass is supposed to bring out the flavor of the wine. From the way the slope of the glass is made and the shape and the size to fit the swirling, a glass can make a wine tasting experience that much better. Honestly, if you don't believe me, open a nice bottle of wine (at least $50) and pour one glass of nice glass and one glass of cheap plastic cup, and see if you can tell the difference.

As for the quality of the wine, my personal belief is that "when you pay peanut, you get peanut". A wine that is at least of certain price range means that the vineyard had made the effort of cultivating the vines in proper method and the winery had made a decent effort of using quality material to make wine. An expensive wine does not guarantee good wine, but if you line up 10 bottles of expensive wines and 10 bottles of cheap wines in a blind tasting, you surely will have more preference for the expensive stuff. I am snobby when someone pours me a glass of cheaply made wine that has high acidic taste and no complexity. It is like drinking a glass of grape juice with rubbing alcohol. That I am very snobbish about.

Rest of the time, I am easy going, adventurous wine drinker ready to try something new, just for the heck of it.

I'm not a wine snob.
Although I do enjoy exploring new food/wine combinations.
It is truly an art to find a wine that can compliment what your meal is.
There are so many choices and combinations out there, it's quite fun.
but sorry I won't do a plastic cup for wine, I'm not too good for a plastic cup, in fact I use them all of the time. But when I'm drinking wine i prefer an actual wine glass, maybe it just makes me feel more astute :)

It depends on my mood if I'm a wine snob. I'll drink, or try to drink, just about any wine you hand me. Plastic cup? Well... I have plastic wine flutes. Kinda have to with little kids in the house.... who like to drink their juice in mom's "fancy glass". lol

I am headed to a wine and jazz festival next month. For my admittance fee, I'll get a free wine glass and cork screw. So... if I go for several years, I'll have a nice set of wine glasses. ;-)

Also, no shame in drinking a boxed wine. It lasts longer, as the air cannot get in and turn the wine to vinegar. If you open a bottle, it needs to be consumed within a day or two of opening. A box will last several months..... unless you're a lush, and will consume it in 3 gulps. lol

yes, am a wine snob, i don't like sweet wine, Two buck Chuck is watered down wine flavor and I think white zinfandel tastes like kool aid.

However, I don't care if it is glass or plastic cup I am drinking out of, or if it is red or white, and i could really honestly not care if I have a steak with a nice glass of cold sparkling wine. I drink what I like. And not all wines over $20 are worth it.

A bit of both actually. No plastic cups or boxed /cheap wine, but I will drink a white with a steak. Though a good red goes with the steak much better.

I'm sort of a wine snob, but not to the point where I'll only drink certain types with certain foods. However, I suggest you do follow a suggested wine/food pairing once...when you get a good combination, it's fantastic!

The "red with meat -white with fish" is NOT wine snobbery. That's roughly the same as saying that you put catsup on hamburgers but not on fried chicken.

I just enjoy wine, its more than the taste that draws me to wine, its the social atmosphere that goes with it.
