It really depends on how badly the tooth is broken down. If it slightly fractured then she can place a crown. But if most surfaces of the tooth are broken down, the next step in saving the tooth is a root canal, then a crown.

It largely has to do with whether or not the tooth in question is salvageable. If there is too much decay/damage/infection and there is not enough left of the healthy tooth in which to place a crown, they will usually opt to pull the tooth.

HELLO CAYENNE,

THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION DEPENDS A LOT ON THE PATIENTS DESIRES AND THE CLINICAL CIRCUMSTANCES AT HAND.
SOME PEOPLE WOULD RATHER EXTRACT RATHER THAN SPEND THE $ TO SAVE A TOOTH.

AT OTHER TIMES CLINICAL CONDITIONS ARE SUCH THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT A CROWN CAN BE SUCCESSFUL.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CASE AT HAND.

It depends on whether his kid needs to go to college or if he needs to get money for his new boat or summer home.
