Hi,
To be completely honest it all depends on the person really. Im quite slim and all my friends kept telling me it would really hurt me. However i braved it and had my first tattoo of quite a large dolphin on the top of my right arm. I could of sat there all day as apart from feeling a little numbness and tingling feeling i can not say it hurt me at all. My dolphin only took an hour to do.
The LAST tattoo i had done was on the top of my back. It reads fallen Angel in capital letters. Its quite big and goes from one shoulder blade to the next. Now that DID hurt. Mostly though it hurt me in the centre where my spine is and on the edges of my shoulder blades and this is because these parts are more boney. So yeah i will have to agree with anyone who says the more boney the area the more pain you will feel. The one on my back took three hours.
Another factor to consider is your pain thresh hold. If yours is high then its likely you wont find it too painful. If its low then it may hurt. As far as the exstent of the pain goes...its not really PAIN. It feels more like a hot burning feeling which is uncomfortable rather than painful. Hope this helps

I got my first 2 tattoos at the same time, on both sides of my upper arms. One was more painful than the other but it didn't last long at all. It only took 30 minutes to do both. I have no regrets at all. If it's something you really want go for it!!!!

Don't know about upper back, but I have a band that goes all the way around my upper arm. For the most part it wasn't bad at all, but the 3 inches underneath the inside of my arm were pretty rough. That is one of the most sensitive areas on the body to tattoo.
Hope that helps.

I have tattoos all over my back. The upper back is not as bad as going towards the middle of your back and closer to the sides of you back, that hurts the worst. As for the arm I'm not too sure on that one.

I have one on each upper arm and am actually getting one covered to do a much bigger one. The only thing i can say about upper arm is if they go under or around ur arm...it gets sensitive but if i can handle it anyone can lol.
i have a dolphin on my upper right back shoulder blade and that wasnt too bad...just as they go toward your under arm and down your side..tender.

Well I have one on my lower back. It hurt but it wasnt unbearable. Its like a cat scratch and a burning sensation. The upper back and upper arm is supposed to hurt LESS then your lower back, So you have nothing to worry about it.
It IS going to hurt, and dont listen to anyone who says it doesnt, but its not terrible. Over boney areas is the worst and as the upper back and arm are not very boney it shouldnt be too bad. Go get your tatt.
Good Luck

I got a tattoo on my upper arm and it DIDN'T hurt at all. It felt cool, kind of tickled. The only part that hurt was at the end when the dude sprayed it down with alcohol.

Hi, your upper arm is not painfull at all, it may sting a little but not as bad as your upper back. i would have it on my upper arm if i was you. i was 13 when i had my first tattoo and i had mine on my upper arm, the reason it doesn't hurt as much there is because it's on your muscle. as your back is bone.
good look with whichever you choose:D

I have one between my shoulder blades and I was all freaked out to get it because it was my first one and I had no idea what it would feel like, I kept trying to pinch myself with my nails to see if I could take it, But when I was having it done it truly wasnt that bad, even when it was over the spine part, my guy was gentle. The whole shop was laughing at me because I was purposely being dramatic, it lightened the mood, it also helped that my 2 friends were in the room with me, so I could take to them about things instead of trying to make small talk with the artist.

depends how big the tat is but it hurts like a 3 or a 4 at the most i would say upper arm not as bad, its like a shot that you are going to feel over and over again, you will eventually get use to it and the pain will subside
