Getting the tooth extracted is the long term solution but until then, she needs to take antibiotics because they will lessen the infection. Her dentist can prescribe her antibiotics if she has visited the office and is scheduled for treatment. The next best thing is to go the emergency room- she should at least be given antibiotics and maybe even pain meds.

First has she visited a dentist? She will have to bf having it pulled and make sure there is not infection. If there is infection she will have to take antibiotics for 7 days bf having the extraction. The ER will give her pain meds and antibiotics until she can get it extracted. If she has not seen a dentist yet I suggest she go to the ER immediately as infection in the tooth can cause sinus infections. If she has seen a dentist call him and ask if they will call in some pain meds to your pharmacy. Most of the time they will.
She can take up to 800mg of ibuprofen daily and it will help with swelling and inflamation and somewhat with the pain.. Stay away from Tylenol as it will not help, Motrin or generic ibuprofen are best. Do not suck on ice as someone else suggested. If there is infection or the tooth has abscessed she could break it on ice and be in a worse situation. Try hot compresses for 20 mins on, 20 mins off. Use a heating pad or microwave a damp towel/wash cloth for 15 secs and apply to the side that hurts. Orajel will not help, don't even waste your money.

Couple of ideas. If it is not bothered by cold, try sucking on some ice. This will numb the area. If cold bothers it, try some Oragel or another oral analgesic. These work OK, but not great. It might help take the edge off some. If none of these options work, she should talk to her dentist. Maybe he can prescribe something short term, or maybe he can do some sort of short term financing for the work.
