(UK) I keep seeing small (about 12inch diameter) aerial/antenna/dish type things on the side of properties. What are they receiving/transmitting? They are flat and grey and puzzle me....

They are most likely parabolic dish antennas for receiving satellite TV broadcasts, especially if they are facing in a southerly direction (toward the sky over the equator).
The other possibility is that it is a receiver for some local subscription-based TV broadcast on a microwave channel

they are receivers for the thought aliens, if they knock on your door just think "I'm not in"
