You asked 3 questions, I assume you want answers for all three.
1) The Old Testament was written before His death, the New Testament was written anywhere from 10 to 65 years after his death.
2) "so long" is a subjective term. What might be long to you may not be long to others. The 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) were the first NT books written, they are the only ones that deal with the life of Jesus.
3) As far as telling a story that happened 20 years ago, if the event was dramatic and life changing, yes, you can recall details. People testify in court about events that happened years earlier, and that is good enough to convict or acquit. Even if you throw out the concept of "Divine Inspiration", if Jesus had such an impact on peoples lives, it's not unreasonable to believe that they could remember events form 10 - 15 years earlier.

The four gospels were probably written in their form from 60 - 100 AD with Mark first and John last.
These are indeed second or their hand accounts of Jesus' life but they were not entirely compiling the stories. There is evidence that several of the writers had a proto-gospel source in the Q document placing its origin closer to the time of Christ. Q and Mark predate Matthew and Luke and probably had a large influence on them.
John is more troubleing as he isnt Part of the Q/Mark origin and estimates vary from scholar to scholar but consensus is around 90-100 AD
The reason the apostles themselves didnt write gospels is anyone's guess. They may have written the foundation texts which were adapted to MMLJ, but have long been lost.
So the gap may not be so huge but rather we just dont have letters and writings of the time immediantly after jesus' death.
Alas one of the many things lost in history like the Greek Tragedies and even the original sources of the Torah, which, with the Documentary Hypothesis, has a multitude of sources.

which part? The old testament was finished long before the birth of Jesus. Some books of the new testament may have been written as early as 15-20 years after his resurrection.
As far as being able to tell a story 20 years later...its very possible. My grandfather is no longer alive, but he could remember some things from even the 30's and 40's, but couldn't remember what he had for breakfast that morning. I'm thinking details about the time you spent with God himself would be pretty fresh in your mind even hundreds of years later, so you would be able to tell the story pretty well.

All of the scriptures that God intended for the Bible were written prior to AD 100. Anything written after that was not inspired (including some of the "books" the Catholics put in their Bible)
By around A.D. 100, God had given all the information to man that He was going to give (Jude 3; Rev. 22:18-19; II Pet. 1:3).
1. Immediately upon completion of these writings, copies were necessary (cf. Col. 4:16; I Thess. 5:27).
2. The only means of duplication until the fifteenth century (in A.D. 1454 Johannes Gutenburg invented the printing press) was by manual handwriting.
3. It is by these handwritten copies, handed down through the centuries, that we have the text of the Bible today.
4. The "autographs" (the very documents that were penned by the inspired authors, Paul, Peter, John, Matthew, Luke, etc.) have not been preserved for us today. We have copies of the autographs.
The catholic church will attempt to tell you that "they" gave you the Bible but that is entirely incorrect. The New Testament "canons" were decided long before the catholic church existed. Of course the catholic church claims other "innovations" as well that they cannot back up or prove.
See source for brief articles on the history of the Bible.

The bible as we know it is two parts the Old Testament and the New Testament. Only the New Testament was about Jesus and his disciples.
Most of the New Testament was written by His disciples based on the memories they had of their time with Him. They probably did write many things down while He was alive but scrolls did not last that long and had to be constantly re-written. His followers were harassed and at times outlawed by authorities of the time. All writings and meetings had to be in secret. It was only after Roman emperor Constantine allowed their religion that the followers got organized enough to collect all the writings into a single form we know as the New Testament.

The Scriptures were often referred to by Jesus as the O.T. was written long before the birth of Christ. The "Final Ratification" of the Scriptures that compose the "Bible" occurred in A.D. 397. Yes, as God is the "Author" of All Scripture, telling men exactly what to write, do U really think it's Not going to be Accurate???
Rule #1. The bible is Always Right!
Rule #2. If U think the Bible is wrong, see Rule #1!!!

Well...the majority of the "Bible" (the OT) was written 5,000+ years BEFORE Jesus...but I digress...
Do you mean the Gospels...?? The usual dating is 57-70 A.D. - with the Gospel of John showing manuscript evidence of no earlier than 90 A.D.
As for remembering a story or an event for 20 years....you bet I can...especially if I've heard/told the story 1,000 times...which the Apostles and witnesses to the Resurrection certainly did.

earliest writing (Gospel of Mark)dates to 25-30 years after, the last Gospel (John) was written 80 years after Jesus' death (and long after the Apostle John's death as well).
