Tony Stewart has now won 3 of the last four NASCAR Nextel Cup series races. As he makes a summertime charge to win the championship, let's look at what the numbers tell us about his chances.

Stewart appears to be a slow starter and his 2007 NASCAR season is an example of that. No victories for twenty races and then he goes three for four. But if you look deeper at the numbers, the rest of the teams out to be really worried about the rest of this NASCAR season's results.

When you look at his total victories in Cup races (he has 30 in all), 28 have come after the 10th race of the year. And a total of 23 victories are after the 15th race of the season. When he broke the victory flag out a few weeks ago in Chicago, you guesed it, it was the 19th race of this season. And half his victories in the past have come after race #20.

So this appears to be a sort of habit for Tony and he looks like he has now started a hot streak. His victories have jumped him to number 4 in the Chase standings and he looks to be strongly positioned to be in the hunt for the Cup. Stewart is 12th overall in total victories since 1972 and has won the championship, so he knows how to get it done.

You can talk about the ********* and the whining, but the man can drive. And the NASCAR drivers that compete with him know it. It will be an interesting second half.

GO TONY

TWO TIME CHAMPION SOON TO BE THREE TIME

I saw this as about a 5 or 6 car deal a few weeks back. With Carl's recent string of strong runs I have to add him to MY list of contenders. In order of likelihood that they will win the Nextel Cup: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch (momentum). Except for Edwards and Hamlin all these drivers are past champions and know how to deal with the late season pressure. Both Carl and Denny finished much higher than anyone expected they would in their rookie seasons.

Jeff Gordon.... although with the new points system anything can happen cuz they all get set back to basiclly zero again.
Jeff would be going for his 6th Championship title had they not changed the points system cuz 2004 would have been another Championship for him.

I gotta look at my man, Tony. Gotta love #20. Jr ain't enough like his old man to win. He's become more of a spokesmodel than a racecar driver. Tony is the next Dale Sr and is a legend in the making.
