After 7 years of suffering with this, i went to the doctors 2 weeks ago!
she said i have depression and extreme anxiety.. she has reffered me for counceling and put me on Citalopram..... 10mg per day for the first month and increasing me to 40 mg a day.
i just can't face people, i gave work up a year ago because this got so bad! I hardly leave the house, and i was told that i could claim this, and i would have to ask my gp for a sick note, but was just wondering if anyone had any info! what the procedure is I have never heard of this before! how do i do it?
how do i ask the gp for this? Thank You xXx

Actually, sounds like you have social anxiety disorder...fear of social situations...It is a definite condition...so there should be some sick pay for it...

in the USA, if the doctor has given you a specified amount of time that he wants you to rest for(not working) some companies will give sick pay. It all depends on the country. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it will work the same in the UK. check with your doctors, they may be able to help you more.

I had what doctors thought was depression for over 8 years, and it kept getting worse and worse. Suddenly one year it got so bad and anxiety was added in to a huge degree that I lost my job over it and could not function. I was hospitalized three times to try to get my medications correct (I'm actually bipolar not just depressed). Because of my history, the lose of job, and the fact that doctors documented the problems, I was able to go onto Social Security disability (which I am still on a year later). I was accepted my first time applying, but I was told most people have to apply at least twice.
You apply through your county health office. (At least I had to in Michigan)
Good luck to you!

If you are in America, this would probably be covered by the Americans WIth Disabilities Act. Unfortunately, I don't know the process.

It depends on how you want to claim this. If you want to claim your depression stemmed from your work then file a worker's compensation claim. If you claim that you have personal depression issues which are increased while participating in normal society then you might want to claim disability through the state. I dont know if the state will approve you for Depression and Anxiety, you'll have to ask. I know if you try to claim it for workers comp (based on CA rules) your claim will be delayed and investigated throughly and most likely will take years to resolve. This would include potential periods of no payment. go online or to your local state disability office for more information.
I think you should just wait for the medications to kick in. It usually takes a couple weeks. If you have any sick time or vacation time with your employer I would suggest using that for a few days, then toughing it out. I did it. It sucks, but this is life, deal with it.

you would contact the department of social and health services and seek a social security pension under a disability. They will tell you the sort of documentation you need. Sadly, this is really hard to get out of the government, and they will usually deny your applications one, two or even three times before considering it.

It really depends on your employer's policies and your insurance company's policies as to what they cover. You may be eligible for short term disability through them.
You may also qualify for SS disability, as someone else said. Contact your local social services office to find out how to apply.

If diagnosed you can also try to get SS disability. But you must be treated on a schedule. It is a scary condition.
