A forest is defined by the canopy coverage. In a forest the branches and foliage of separate trees usually meet or interlock.

A woodland has a more open canopy. Trees spaced further apart allows more sunlight to penetrate to the ground between them.

Coppicing and pollarding are both old methods of woodlot management that allows harvesting with out killing the tree.

I don't think there is any specific number. Also the words "woods" and "forest" are kinda interchangeable (at least where I grew up in New Hampshire)

The singular of woods, wood is also sometimes referred to as a copse or coppice defined as A thicket of small trees or shrubs;

Here's another def for coppice
Consists of shoots arising from stumps of trees which are cut on a regular cycle. Used to supply small - diameter poles for building, fencing and fuel. Creates a variable habitat.

For me, I always thought of a copse as a bunch of trees where you could see through to the other side and forest or woods when you look in all you see is trees.
