It's not just the airlines that you will need to contact, you will have to get permission from Customs and Immigrations in DR as well. There are forms to fill out, doctors notices and shots, and the dog may even need to be quarentined.
Check with the DR government to see what you need to do to import the dog.
As for the airline. Most airlines allow only 1 or 2 dogs in the cabin per flight, and they must be in a cage and fit under the seat. You cannot take them out or feed/clean the cage etc.
Check with the specific airlines about a specific flight. You may show up with your pooch and there may be others that have a dog in front of you. then you are out of luck.
Do your homework with the airlines, vet and DR government.

The puppy will have to be crated. So if that is your intention you will need to purchase a crate. Also I would contact American airlines to ask them what the rules, regulations and fees for shipping a pet. You may find that just flying a pup that little could be a problem. If you have a local vet that you know you may want to call and ask for some advise.
In regard to the Tylenol PM comment. Unless you want to kill the puppy or any other dog you never give them Tylenol. An animals liver can not process tylenol.

Call American... with the size of the puppy he'll be able to ride in the cabin with you but you'll need an approved carrier and he'll need to be in it during takeoff and landing. Like someone else said, it'll cost around $100.
Do not tranquilize him. Something about the altitude and cabin pressure works as a natural tranq, additional tranqs can be bad news on small breed dogs.
You might better check into quarantine rules as well. The US can be pretty strict about importing animals, and since it was born in the Dominican Republic, it won't be the same rules as if you'd bought it in the US, flown it with you to DR, and then back again.

It's a chihuahua right? just slip it a sleeping pill, and put it in your carry on. The flight back can't be that long. a tylenol PM will probably put that thing out for like 12 hours.
j/k You can get pets flown anywhere you want, it'll just cost you some money. Call the airline I'm sure they will be able to help you.

Go to the Airlines webpage . Cost is $100.00 . Animal has fit under the seat in front of you or some airlines will let you keep the dog/puppie in your lap during the flight depending on the size. No prior arrangments are needed but helpful to call reservations so they can put it in your reservation.

I know that what you will need to do is for sure is to get it a crate to carry it in. Do not give it anything to make it sleepy unless it comes from the VET!! Call the airlines and see what all you need to do because with you coming from another country, their rules might be different then ours. Good luck and you will do good with the puppy.
