If you kept the dog.. no.. I dont' think I would anyway, but.. I dont' think it would hold up in court with you keeping the dog.. first you'd have to prove that it was his dog to begin with.. (if he decides to say it was always yours).. second, they'd assume that since it happened, you don't mind that much or you wouldn't have taken the dog in.. because he could damage something else.. Just take care of the dog.. furniture is furniture.. it's replaceable.. the cost of court fees, lawyers and the time ... it wouldn't really help.. especially if you lost.

Glad that you kept the dog. Did the dog chew up your furniture after your room mate left? Or when he was there with you?
I would just be glad that your X friend let you keep the dog. The dog is better off with you anyway.

You could take him to small claims court but it'll probably end up costing you more in the long run. Count your losses and consider this a lesson in being more particular about who you allow to stay in your house.
As for the dog, a good crate should prevent him from destroying anymore of your stuff.

It is wrong for the owner to not at least pay half of the bill for damages; however, you also took the responsibility when you accepted both to live with you. You can try civil court, but you might not have a good outcome. Good luck

you sound like a nice person. Just get over it it - the headaches are not worth $1500.
