Your budgie need the grit from the sandpaper.
They need grit for there digestive system. I give my budgies grit (gravel) and crushed oyster shells it is important for there health. You can also get them the grit on rolls for there perches. My birds love this cause it helps with there nails and there beaks to stay trimmed. Also a wider veriety of food is good to have. Dont just feed your budgie plain budgie seeds, they like a veriety. My female budgie ate the sandpaper rolls to almost nothing cause they were in mating season and they need the nutrition from the grit. Maybe your budgie is in mating season also especially if you have a male with her. Good luck If i can be more help please email me at puff4040@cogeco.ca
I have owned budgies and cockatiels for over 4 yrs and have even had some babies from them. Good Luck

Do you have grit in the cage?

Sandpaper is very similar to grit.. and grit is an almost essential part of a birds digestive system.. Budgies don't need it as much as some, but it is still instinctual..

Do NOT feed your birds grit! It is very harmful to their digestive systems!! Some bird owners give their birds grit, but they do not need it. Your bird may be trying to trim her beak, in which you should use a cuttle bone, or she may be trying to gather stuff up to make a nest. Try feeding your bird things other than seed so that they do not eat the grit!!
