Use toothpicks and glue. Tell your teecher to eat your shorts.

Timmy, I'm sorry to hear of such a discouraging teacher. Your teacher should have encouraged you to challenge yourself to build the bridge. Many structures have been built with toothpicks. It might take too long if you have to turn it in soon, but it's a great project to do as a hobby. Some people have worked on these kinds of projects so well they have built a career of making models for landscape architects and architects.

HOW you build it is up to your creativity -there is no set way to do it, but I will tell you some of the ways you can use to try it.

It's easiest to build the bridge by finding an existing bridge to copy, or at least use as your inspiration, rather than trying to invent your own bridge.

Cut pieces of foam, small boxes, bottles, etc. to hold the structure up while you are waiting for the glue to dry.

I use a "Tacky" glue, but a hot glue gun is okay if you use a sharp razor to cut the strings of glue off after it dries.Don't use the hot glue next to any of your temporary supports or they won't separate when you want to lift the bridge off of them. Experiment with paper under the parts you use the hot glue on, or other things that it doesn't stick to.

When you buy the toothpicks to use, be sure you buy all the same shape, for example, all round toothpicks, or all flat ones. Only mix the shapes of toothpicks if you are planning to call attention to a particular design feature, or structure that looks different from the rest.

Much of learning to build models is experimentation. Have fun with it. Stop for a while if you feel yourself becoming frustrated, or use the frustration to motivate yourself to find solutions to the challenge you are having. You may go to my profile and email me if you have other questions.
