I was just wondering how the public school climate is in your area. Is it segregated? If you grew up in the same area where are you are now, is it better or worse when you were growing up?
Also, if you have children, how do you feel about it?
I'm just interested to hear others' stories across the nation.
Thanks!

Our public schools seem very segregated here. I'm white/a quarter Asian, but I live in a neighborhood that's full of mostly minorities. School districts here are set up by what neighborhood you live in. Their are three main districts here and the one I go to is over 90% minority filled. However, if you go to another nearby district, you'll find that it's filled with students from a neighborhood of mainly white families so they probably have just a 10% minority population there. In another district, they're somewhat more evened out now because a new neighborhood opened up by them that is cheap enough for most minorities with low income to afford to live there so that district is probably 30% minority filled.

So, yes, the schools are segregated. Not surprisingly, the nicest of the schools is the one with mainly white students, then it goes to the one that's somewhat mixed, and lastly my school isn't that nice looking inside or out. However, one good thing about my school is that we offer more advanced placement classes than the two other districts. Unfortunatly, we don't have good elective classes like the other districts do but being able to have so many advance placement offers does make up for a lot.
