I'm glad you asked this question, I have a 17 month old that will bang the cup on the floor to get the milk to spray out. (we have the no spill kind with the soft nipples) I usually just take it away from her.

Your 4 year old doesn't need a sippy cup. Give him a big boy cup and only put a little bit in it. Make him come to the kitchen or dinning room for it. When he is done it goes out of reach. As for the 23 month old, I would do the same thing with the sippy cup. There is no need for them to carry a cup around with them all day. They should be old enough to tell you when they are thirsty. Obviously they don't want the drink if they are playing with it and dumping it on your carpet. Good luck!

I went through this with my son around the age of 2. Thats when I decided it was time for a real cup. Unless we where in the car or out somewhere visiting.

So, the kids are learning to do science experiments!

Allow sippy cups at the table or in the kitchen ONLY, never over carpet or around the house. (Same with food, crayons, paints, and playdoh)

For the spitting -- when he spits, he is done drinking, so take away the cup until the next snack time.

Important: YOU ARE THE PARENT -- It's up to you to BE IN CONTROL. Through all of this it is a win or lose situation. If you don't deal with it today, you'll be facing it another day ahead. Politeness and respect and obedience start now.

I read in a magazine to put an X in stickers on their highchair or placemat and to encourage them to put the cup on the X. My daughter does the same thing your kids do and I agree, it's very annoying. I haven't tried the stickers yet but maybe it'll work with your 23 month old at least? Usually I just use the cups that have that valve thing you can put in that prevents at least most of the liquid from coming out (they can still suck it out though). Good luck.

Hi, My son is 2 1/2 and does that also. I found these sippie cups at Walmart called Nubbie and they do not spill. You can shake them all around and nothing comes out. And, even better, they are inexpensive...approx. $1.50 each.

Try it. Using a real cup is difficult. Especially since you will have to watch them constantly so they don't spill their drink.

My son is 22 mos and I know exactly how you feel. He's also figured out how to press on the sippy cup mouthpiece just right so that he can turn it upside-down and let it drip all over him! A feat that is absolute murder in the car.....Just about every mom I talk to says their child went through something like this. Just a learning phase of some kind. In your case, I think it may be a copying-bigger sibling thing. I just keep a towel under my son's car seat, blankets on the couches, and alot of carpet cleaner around.......:)

Every time they do that take away the cups. My kids thought it was funny till I started taking away the cups. I told them they would not get them back till they stopped doing that. ( I have a 2 and 3 year old)

yes very annoying, my son is 22 months and did the same thing, I took his tippie away from him and would only let him drink out of a regular cup with my assistance, when I gave the tippie cup back he didnt do it again. Good luck with that!

Take the cups away. Make a house rule that drinks stay in the kitchen.

believe it or not,it may be time for a big boy cup!
yes , you will have the odd spill, mabey quite a few to start, but you will be SOOO happy when they stop. Most kids if they spill on themselves will not like it at all, and this will teach them as well...lol.
good luck!
