or can i get away without it? the speaker is just 10 yrs old.

There are two ways to refoam a speaker. One way requires you to remove the dust cap so that the voice coil can shimmed in order to center it. Another way has you pushing down around the dust cap to make sure the voice coil isn't rubbing and does not have you removing the dust cap. I have refoamed two sets of my personal speakers without having to remove the dust cap and have been successful and completely satisfied with the results. If you haven't yet cut the dust cap off, I'd try that. However if you have cut the caps off already I would replace them.

Hi benny. As the removal of the original dust cap is part of the refoaming process another slightly larger dust cap has to be attached after refoaming,other wise the voice coil will be exposed to dust and debris.
