I work for awol apprehension in the army and can tell you this. If you were still in training, and you turn yourself in, you will be processed out of the army. If you are already at your duty station, you will be returned to your unit, and they decide what to do with you. You have the option to stay, but you will be punished, so just be prepared for it. Suck it up and accept your punishment and drive on my friend. Of course, these are general statements, it all depends on the specifics of your case.

How long have you been gone?

And yes, you can always go back. If less than 30 days you are just AWOL, you show up at your unit (or the nearest recruiter if you cannot afford a way back....) and the commander will give you an article 15, punishment dependant on your reasons why you left.

If you are already a deserter then you will go before a military court... you can explain your case and why you left (these are matters of extenuation and mitigation) and express your desire to remain in service. It might happen.

But the bottom line is that you do HAVE to report in sometime. Else you are a fugative from the law just waiting to be busted -- while being shut out of any federal program / job / aid and waiting for the IRS to turn you in.

Dont wait for the police officers to pick you up. Turn yourself in and get it over with.

Good Luck and God Bless you with the strenght to do the right thing.

If you have been gone less than 30 days, they will charge it to your leave, put you up for an NJP (Article 15 for soldiers, take some rank and pay, and most likely, that will be the end of it, especially if you go back on your own. Longer than 30 days, you are no longer UA (AWOL to the Army) you are a deserter. If you get pulled over, arrested, whatever, you will be taken back into military custody, thrown in the brig (stockade) and dishonorably discharged. You can never go back. They will do this do you even if you get caught YEARS later. When I was on Camp LeJeune, there was an older guy, about 65, who had deserted and he finally decided to turn himself in. Because he did that, and because of his age, they didn't throw him in the brig, but they did make him stay in the barracks as a Private (he had to wear a uniform and everything) while they processed his DD. You could see him going to the PX and stuff while he awaited discharge.

Depending on how long you have been awol, yes, you can actually go back.

Expect to be busted in rank, but there is a good chance you would be allowed to finish your enlistment.

Now, you probally won't be allowed to reenlist, not unless you turn yourslef into a really sharp troop the rest of your enlistment.

But awol, has never meant an automatic discharge.

If you are AWOL then you need to report back to your unit. If you have been AWOL more than 30 days you are now a deserter.

Either way - you are still in the military. And one of these days you are going to get pulled over for a traffic ticket and then suddenly find yourself sitting in jail. And the military will come and bail you out of jail 'when they get around to it.'

Yes you can go back, but it depends on the situation. Usually they will either give you a reduction in rank and/or have you confined to work and barracks for a period of time. If it's during war or combat it can be a lot more serious.

Not that I know of. You desserted once...the military is not about to risk putting anymore time and effort in.

It is possible. My brother did it. He was demoted and lost pay, etc., but he was back in. Pretty much had to start over.
