Don't feed a rat hamster food.. they do NOT have the same needs as a completely different species..

Here's one that is easy to make.. and it makes a LOT... just keep it in an air tight container and it will last a long time..

That site has a lot of good information.. Do a lot of research on rats.. look online, there are some GREAT rat sites..
http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm This one has great ideas for toys, and things to keep your rat happy.. as well as some great pics..

The people working at most pet stores have little to no actual knowledge about rats.. (I was told that my first rat could live it's whole life in a hamster cage.. and, all the people working there tried to pick the rat up by it's tail.. I ended up getting him out of the cage since they were so ignorant.. they kept getting bitten)

My rats get all kinds of treats! Fresh veggies and fruits are great (just make sure they are washed), dried fruit, yogurt. Almost anything, really! Check some of the frequently posted "rat health" websites for info on the short list of things that they absolutely CAN'T have, stay away from too much sugary or protein heavy foods. As for around the house toys and supplies, I use cardboard cracker boxes, toilet paper rolls, cotton balls... anything (safe) that they can hide in or use as bedding. Just make sure it wasn't used for or stored near chemicals.

small peices of lettuce carrot or any other small portion of fruit or vegie will be a fine treat, but they also sell rat treat at pet stores. You can use toilet paper or paper toel rolles as toys, and again, they sell many rat toys at your local petstore. But I recomend rat food insted of hamster food. Very different diets.

As other people have already said, hamster food is not suitable for rats as they're completely different animals with different nutritional requirements.

Hope those links help - but please, get him/her a (same sex) friend, all rats need company. If you're not sure about whether your cage is big enough, check out this cage calculator:

(they also have an excellent forum for advice)
