I have bought a car from a private owner a few days ago and the engine went on it the next day. The car had 160,000 miles on it.

Is there a California law that says I should get my money back?
I bought the car and the engine when on it within 24 hrs.

did you get a smog cert with the car? if not it is up to the seller to smog the vehicle before it transfers ownership, take him to court.

There's no California law that says you should get your money back. You bought a used car with 160k on the odometer. Used cars are sold "as-is" unless a written warranty of some sort is offered by the dealer. You purchased from a private seller, who most likely doesn't have the expertise to fully assess the condition of a vehicle. Apparently you don't, either. When buying a used car, it is the responsibility of the buyer, not the seller, to determine the condition of the vehicle before buying it.

The seller doesn't legally have to give you back a dime of your money. It sucks, I know, but welcome to the real world.

You're getting bad advice here. Lemon laws DO NOT apply to a vehicle with 160,000 miles on it. There's not a lot of life left in a vehicle like that. Lemon laws are for new cars, not older used cars.

Im not real sure about california laws but most states have a as is law meaning if you buy a used car it is as is unless you get a warrenty in writing. It aint right you should be able to get something back especially when it goes bad within a day but thats the way it is. You could take him to small claims court but your chances of winning anything is slim.lGood luck.

Did you mean to say that the engine light came on? If that's the case, it may be thousands of things - anything from simple sensor to major problem. Take it to Autozone and run a test.

I don't live in California but I think you just got screwed. With 160,000 miles on it that doesn't surprise me.

I believe California has a Lemon Law. This justifies exactly what you are going through. Talk to your local government head (Senator, Mayor, etc.) or use the internet to find this out.
