"wonder why the most irresponsible idiots in the world who own Pitbulls or mixes get mad and defensive when an intellegent member of the educated veterinary community tries to educate and inform them on their breeds specific issues and how to diminish the negativity surrounding their pets."
Really? Because I did not get that vibe from you when you were talking about the "Pack" of pit bulls who chewed your chicken wire to get at your sheep. As I posted on that same in response to this, the dogs in question were likely NOT pit bulls, as many other breeds are commonly mistaken for Pit Bulls.
I do agree that anyone saying anything even remotely negative about the breed gets a thumbs down. As a pit bull owner, I can say honestly that pit bulls are NOT for novice dog owners and need to be carefully trained. As an intellegent member of the community myself, I am quite sure that the stereotypes surrounding these particular dogs are unwarrented. I also know that there is something like a Pit Bull subculture that uses their Pits as trophys to make them seem more macho. My opinion? If you need a dog to be more macho than you have bigger problems to worry about. it's irresponsible breeding, and people like this that only serve to perpetuate the stereotype.
I think you are right in some ways, and obviously experienced with dogs....just not as much as you think. Have you researched the actual bite records of pits? Are you aware that "Pit Bulls" actually describes 3 different breeds of dog? Can you pick an American Pit Bull Terrier out of a line-up?
We all need more education

I'm 50 years old. When I was 5, the GSD was considered the most dangerous dog. When I was a teenager, it was the Doberman that was considered the steel-jawed death-trap. At 30-something it was the Rottweiler. Now it's Pit Bulls that are menace to society.
Other dogs I see being so labeled will soon be the Mastiff and other Mastiff type dogs.
That said, what may be helpful for the entire breed is for AKC and other "certifying organizations" to develop a breed standard for Pitts - including conformation, size, weight, etc... and temperament. That way people could have a measuring device to hold up when deciding whether this or that dog should be even called a pit bull - etc.etc.
It's also very interesting. I used to live in a really dicey neighborhood - and even though the Pitts I met in that neighborhood were owned by some awfully poor, "ghetto-rats," they were - to a one - sweet, gentle and good natured dogs that got along well with other dogs - as well as the pile of children always bouncing about. Truthfully, I would be proud to have any one of those Pitts as my own.

Pits are not the only breed used for fighting. There are breeds that were frist bred for killing humans. Most terreris have a very strong prey drive, pits are terriers. More pits seemed to owned by the wrong kind of people. There is no proof that pits casue 75% of all bites. The CDC as said that there ti no way to prove pits do this becasue have how often pits are mis ID. My Neice as had many people say what a beautiful pit she as, sho owns a lab. Woman down the street called AC and said she wass bitten by a pit bull. When seh pointed out the dog it was a black standard poodle, Small child attack in her yard in Henderson, mother reported it was a pit bull. It was a mastiff. People for the most part have no idea what a pit looks like so if hte dog is big and it bit someone it as to be a pit bull.
http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
this similer tp a test given to AC Officers all over the country most failed so how can a person who dose work with dogs be sure of thier ID of a breed.

People have the ability to make choices, these poor dogs cannot, we make the choices for them, thus the iggnorant people whom breed and fight there dogs>< And the welfare thing dont get me going on that, it opens up a whole other can of beans that pisses me off also>< But once again i dont nor ever will understand the human mind, why not just have your dog as a pet, love them as they do you. Get a real job to supply your habits, i have to work so should every other capable human being out there. I earn my money, yet i pay for other able bodied people to sit around smoke dope and drink away my taxes>< Then they turn around cause the government is not paying them enough, and gamble, sell drugs, fight there dogs, and awww poor pitiful me i dont make enough money>< The system is screwed in the head imo, and if they would make heftier laws on dog fighting more then a slap on the wrist maybe just maybe this wouldnt happen as frequently as it does.... And nothing makes me more upset that it takes someone with some sort of statis to bring the world of dog fighting in such a uproar>< I have never seen so many stories online and in our local paper with letters and headlines about dog fighting then now scince the whole vick thing.. Kinda sad when yourself and many others no it happens all the time, now they finally want to set a example and set some laws>< What a messed up government IMO, to pay for lazy people, and not care about our pets, and future pets, that never have a chance.

I agree with the "breeders, supporters, and owners or pitbulls and pit mixes" that you talk about. Although I am not a Pitbull or Pitbull Mix owner myself, I agree that these dogs are loyal and intelligent dogs that are put on a hated and deplorable pedestal of shame simply because they have owners who allow or train their dogs to be vicious. I cannot understand why the news and newspapers and any other type of media instigate hatred and abuse of these dogs when someone is attacked or chased or bitten. These dogs are even banned in some cities across America. Who is to say that these dogs are the worst breed and who is to say they are the best? Not me. However I do have my own opinion of the breed and that opinion is:
1) Yes, pitbulls were originally bred for fighting
2) Yes, pitbulls were also originally bred for bull-baiting
3) Yes, there are pitbulls out there who aren't the most ideal dog for the breed.
HOWEVER, what about the other pitbulls out there that are ideal and that are trained, loved, loyal, and a wonderful companion? Who says that they are ruled out becuase they do not resemble the exact same characterisitics as there ancestors that took part in fighting and bull baiting? The chances of hearing about other dogs in the media compared to hearing about pit bulls is ten to one; ten being pits and one being other breeds. We don't hear about a poodle attacking someone. We don't hear about French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Kerry Blue Terriers, or even the Jack Russell Terrier (who were ALL historically bred as fighting dogs) as attacking someone.
I am for pit bulls just being dogs but I cannot sit back and let them be mistreated. I know that there are pit bulls out there who aren't perfect. Yes, sometimes they can be quite scary. But all I am saying is.... so are some other dogs... why just blame pit bulls?
Personally, I believe Pit Bulls are exclusively labeled as aggressive, angry, murderous dogs because they CAN be. People will believe anything. They LOOK mean so they ARE mean.... what a way to say that dog is man's best friend...Lack of education makes people crazy.
As for dog-fighting going on in America, I hate to even talk about it. I believe it is one of the most disgustin things in the world... How can someone say they love their dog and force them into somehting like that?

The answer is simple, lack of education, which is likely why they are on welfare as well. People have no respect for this breed and use them as a way to show how big their d*** is. Look at me, I trained my big *** dog to kill you, i'm such a badass.
I have owned Pits and Pit mixes all my life, and my mother, an uneducated yippy dog owner, fell in love with my Pit, and her mind was forever changed. He is a bigger baby and lover than her little dogs, he is a 70 lb lap dog that my children hug around the neck, roll around on the floor with and he even plays with my cats! He plays with the dogs that come in our yard, not attacks them and he may one day lick somebody to death but that is about all. Mind you he barks and growls if someone who shouldnt be is outside the door, and I have never tested himbut I am sure someone breaking in would definately get eaten.
If you get a dog bred for temperment and treat them well, as well as obeythe laws of responsible bully breed ownership, get a damn book people, you will have the best dog in the world. Those unedumacated asshats do not want to invest the time or the money in learning how to be responsible, they just want to show people how tough their dog is.
EDIT- Shelly, I actually heardabout a pomeranian that killed a baby :) well, not :), that is sad, but it proves your point. THe uncle who was watching both left them alone together on a bedwhile he went to make a bottle and the dog killed the baby, so, any dog can do it, and you are dead on about us not hearing about it.
And yesimalesbian just because you work for the SPCA does not make you an expert on animals, bulldogs do not have a locking jaw, just a very, very strong one, the locking jaw is a misconception. Also, your comment is ridiculous, most purebred lines are rampant with inbreeding, not just Pits. I suggest you learn more about the animals you work with in your job lest you perpetrate more hate for animals with your uninformed "truths".

Its hard not to be on the defensive when it comes to this subject when you love the dogs. I try not to be negative and just reply with my experiences and what research knowledge I have on the breed (my best friend did rescues for pits for years and I've learned a lot from her).
I just wish that these dogs wouldn't be an issue anymore and could just be dogs. Plain and simple.
