Do you have a male cat?? If so - he may be "spraying" it to mark his spot. The "spray" stinks horribly.
If they are two females, then your new cat may have a urinary infection, which can cause the urine to smell pretty bad.

We have one box and five cats, and it doesn't smell like cat poop in here at all. That's because I scoop it first thing in the morning, and last thing I do before going to bed AND anytime in between that I see that the surface has been scufled up.

The trick is to get all the solids and liquids out as soon as possible and put them into a bag that can be taken to the garbage OUTSIDE once or twice a day. I use an old plastic coated cat food bag for that. This way the bottom doesn't get wet and open up unexpectedly when I'm transporting it to the garbage, and the indoor garbage doesn't smell of cat poop either because we don't leave it in the house.

It doesn't take much time at all, I probably spend less than 2 minutes a day, total, scooping between the five cats here. You just get into the habit of glancing at the box every time you go past it, and just 'do it'. It works.

Is it poop or pee that stinks in the box? Is the new cat a kitten or an adult? Kitten poop often stinks really really bad; part of being a kitten. Take a fresh sample in to your vet, have it checked for parasites. Often it's just the way cat poop stinks. A good, natural deodorizer is pine pellets. You can often find pine pellets at farm supply stores like Tractor Supply. Pine is great at neutralizing the bacteria that causes the stink. I have 5 house cats and most of the time, you can't tell where the litter pan is. I usually mix the pine pellets 50/50 with regular clay litter, because some cats don't like using just pellets, prefering the clay litter. You can try it, but have the cat poop checked out by a professional, even if your cats seem healthy and happy.

Ok I have 3 cats and I have tried many things. Hopefully I can help. If you dont have one I would advise getting a covered litter box. Most of these have filters on the top. You may also want to get an additional litter box. Baking soda can help. There is a product that Ive found in most pet isles, its an arm & hammer litter box deoderzier that helps but you have to use it every day to make a differece. I also keep one of those air fresheners right next to them. A plug in or whatever. Good Luck!

My cat box was like that and I was scooping it every other day. I use Tidy Cats multiple cat immediate odor control. I also bought Tidy Cats cat liners that smell so good and help with the odor control.
Otherwise, scoop it everyday. Get one that has a cover. Try out different cat litters until you find one that suits you best.
You might have an oversensitive nose and just pick up on the smell more.
It could also be your cats diet thats making it smell so bad. Try a different food too.

Here's an inexpensive and all natural, fragrance free solution that is perfect for your problem. - I have friends that use it on litter boxes and love it. it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers - little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates odors for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just clip one or two onto litter box.. No spills or chemicals or powder to worry about. Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash etc.- it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and Internet at customerservice@innofresh.com.
Definitely worth trying

Change the litter every day. Make sure both cats are using the box. You can also get a litter box with a top that comes with a vent and filter so the odors get absorbed. You can also mix in some baking soda with the litter to help cut down the smell.

When we got our second cat the litter started smelling really bad. Often times cats are usually stressed out in their new environment and they tend to pee or poo a lot... my second cats poop amount subsided significantly after about a month..
Before that we tried everything
1. installing a little kitty door to our garage with litter in there but our cats didnt want to use the litter in the garage. may be yours would.
2. also try that covered litter box, although it didnt help me much either

but what really helped me was having two or more litter placed in different places around your house or flat. this way the stink became a bit "diluted". the general rule is always have as many litter boxes in your home as number of your cats plus one (but i only have two litters and works fine for me).
everytime you see them doing their business, scoop it out and wrap the poop in several layers of plastic / grocery bags and throw them away. sprinkle with baking soda and add a little more litter. I always use scoopable tidy cat multiple cats formula. Put a big towel underneath the litter box to help avoid litter trailes.

There are things you can buy to put in litter such as: http://www.petco.com/product/2435/Nature-s-Miracle-Litter-Treatment.aspx

but you'll more than likely have to get a second box, or clean it twice as much. It might also be the food the second one is eating, especially if you've changed it from what it was perviously eating, that can really upset a belly. There are special foods out there for cats with sensitive stomachs, most 'indoor' formulas are gentle to keep them from stinking so bad. I recently did a bit of research on petco.com 'cause I have an overweight cat, they have all sorts of info on their foods, might wanna take a look and see, I know some promise 'less smelly' litter boxes.

Best of luck!
