What you are talking about is a 'gorget'. Its a large generally crescent shaped metal plate that is in fact an abbreviated Brest plate. It was a symbol of rank or status often wore by German military police units in WWII.

It had a number for identification. My uncle was 14, when he had to go to the Russian front and get in the night the dead from the nowhere land (between the fronts). If it was not possible, he had at least ot get the chain or the helmet for counting.
There was another group, called the chain dogs, which where a secret police, they only whore their chains and no papers for identification. This guys where fierce. If you would get 500 of them to Iraq, they would probably finish the war in a month.

The German Identification Disk serves the same purpose as American Dog Tags. The disk is stamped in such a manner as to allow you to bend in half along its long axis of the oval so you can take one half it away with you while leaving the other way with the corpse. The Canadian Identication Tag is based on the same idea.

Well, it is their version of the dog tags that all soldiers are required to have. It is for easy identification of the soldier in cases where the face and body were badly burned or charred in battle.
