Typically, a large sheet of cork is put behind the dartboard. If you don't have cork, than a sheet of plywood (or any wood) should do. As long as you don't throw too hard, a quarter-inch sheet should work.
You might also want to try a sheet of MDF - it's a little heavier, but it should be able to save your wall.

Use white chalk to fill the holes and paint over it they are completely covered and put up a piece of plywood or cork board as a backdrop mine is shaped in a half moon shape that I found where new houses were being built the contractor burns a lot of drop wood .Mine was a cut out for an archway 1/2 inch plywood. Half moon and looks classy. haven't yet painted it but intend to let daughter when her painting talents develop she will be allowed to make it into what ever she wants it to be.

you can buy cork board it comes in a roll about 2 to 3 feet wide and about 6' long put it under the dart board and put pictures of people or things you hate on top of the cork so when people miss the dartboard they might hit someone or something they hate instead.

You can buy sheets of 1" thick styrofoam to make a protector for the walls. I bought one foot by two foot sections and glued them together at the edges until I got the size I needed. Then attached it to the wall and mounted the dartboard on it.

my ex and i had a huge piece of cork behind ours because we had a ton of holes from missed darts.. we thought that would completly protect it but maybe it wasnt thick enough (it was almost 3 inches) but when we took it down to move there was a billion holes..not as deep as when we didnt have anything there but they were still visible. we sanded the wall, used a layter of plaster then painted over it and the LL never knew...make sure whatever u put behind it is thick enough to keep it from penetrating the wall...we forgot how hard people throw the darts :(

Get a large bulletin board (if you dont like how it looks you can cover it up with pictures printed of your computer or of your friends, or some plain wrapping paper)
If you want to use a bulletin board you could buy a large piece of Foam Board, and paint it the color of your wall.
G'luck!

Some corkboard would work. So would a sheet of plywood ... paint it to match your wall (or put a coat of paint that clashes for that art-deco look).
