The biggest difference is that the M16A1 had a fully automaic setting while the M16A2 has a 3 round burst setting.

The M16A2 also has more range and some mechanical improvements over the M16A1 so it doesnt jam as much.

Sights are different.

The M16A2 is a little heavier since it has a longer barrel.

The A1 has the old triangle heat shield grips, the A2 has the round grips. The rear sight is adjusted differently between the A1 to the A2 (easier to adjust the A2 sights). There are some mechanical differences as well, the A2 has a longer and heavier barrel, the flash suppressor is different as well. The A1 has an old 3 prong suppressor and the A2 has a round suppressor that is ported at the top and solid on the underside, this forces the riffle to move back down when fired which makes it easier to get back onto target. The A1 also ran full automatic, where the A2 runs 3 round burst.
