Yes of course we should ask forgiveness from people around us when we have wronged them! The Bible tells us to do this--
But we must also seek GOD when needing forgiveness as well- NOT saints, not priests- but GOD- Jesus tells us the way to pray in the NT-- praying to our Heavenly Father. Many are confused on this, because they think the Bible is telling us to go to a person instead of pray to God. What good is that going to do? Jesus is perfect- He is our ONE mediator between God and man, as the Bible says. He is our ONE High Priest, no need for priests anymore, for Jesus has fulfilled that! It is our New Covenant with Him- what is there not to understand? I am asking this again because I see many catholics out there who are confused on this- Please put your trust in JESUS, not man. Know that is it about JESUS, and no priest on earth is sinless, no priest on earth can compare to God! Now that Jesus is here, HE is the one we are to pray to- He is the one we confess our sins to.

What does Jesus say about prayer?
Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Also, we are called to pray together in fellowship:
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

I understand how it was done in the O.T and it is important to know that is how it had to be done because Jesus was not here then-- but now that Jesus has come- God tells us to pray to HIM-- not go through a priest.

Read what I wrote at the very beginning, please read what I wrote and do not skip things or you will not understand....Yes we are to confess to others, for our Father tells us to confess our sins to one another ( we wrong people and we should ask forgiveness) But we need to PRAY to Jesus every single day, and confess any sin in our lives to Him.

Ok I am going to ask all of you to forgive me for going on and on about this-- I should of dropped it for I must not persist in making a point- I made my point the first time and was hoping that some would truly think about this. So forgive me if I ruffled any feathers-

You can confess to each other or a priest but it will do you no good for your friends and priest have no power with God. 1 Timothy 2: 5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Of course we can and should confess our sins to God. God automatically forgives the moment we truly forgive ourselves (not excuse, but acknowledge, repudiate, resolve and forgive). But there is something to be said for saying it out loud, in front of a flesh and blood person. As fallible creatures, our confessing to God can be a sterile, unreal experience. Confessing to a fallible witness, who could judge imperfectly, or even potentially use the knowledge against you, makes the process more real, more effective.

Many priests have said that the factual details of a confession don't matter all that much to them. What they feel is the sense of reaching out, of reconciling with God and the community. They are not ministers of forgiveness so much as supportive witnesses on behalf of the community of an act between the individual and God.

If a person can truly examine themselves, admit their shortcomings to God and sincerely resolve to make amends and reform all on their own, good for them. Others need a little help to make it "real". It's the same process. The priest just gives voice to the forgiveness God already gives. Some people need to hear it out loud.

Amen.
Totally agree with you.
God bless you for expounding on this truth.

I've noticed the people on here are mostly angry. They are angry with God.
They picked the right place even if they give offence answers.
I pray they read your post. Of course they are going to slander you.

But, remember, as Christians, we are going to be persecuted.

God bless you and have a wonderful day!

WE CAN CONFESS TO PEOPLE OF THINGS WE DID TO FEEL BETTER AND THAT CONCERNS THEM,BUT FOR FORGIVENESS FROM GOD WE MUST DO IT THE RIGHT WAY. I'M CATHOLIC SO I CONFESS TO A PRIEST AND RECIEVE PENANCE. THATS CALLED ABSOLUTION.

Considering you have decided to bash Catholicism in favor of your own religion, did you know that without the Catholics you would probably not have even heard of Jesus?

While what you say may be Scriptural, you're not going to wipe out 2000 years of Catholic history on yahoo's Q&A.

so you're saying that Jesus is wrong when He told his disciples to "confess your sins to one another"?

edit: deazone, that's what I keep telling them, but of course they love to turn a deaf ear when you try to point out the loopholes in their theory.
