That sounds awfully high. I took a taxi from the new airport last fall to the area around the Ko San Road (it also took about 45 minutes -- that airport is pretty far out!) and I really don't think it cost any more than about $12. (You'll pay in Baht, of course.) It may have been a little more, but it certainly wasn't anything LIKE $66 -- I was traveling on an incredibly tight budget (backpacking for three months), so I know I wouldn't have paid that!

Where are you getting this $66 from? If someone's telling you that's how much it's going to cost, I'm afraid you're being swindled. There are plenty of taxis at the airport -- it's very orderly and you'll join a cab line like you would in any US city -- so why don't you just get one there when you arrive? Make sure, of course, that the driver uses the meter; the ones at the airport pretty much have to, as they're regulated and checked before they leave, but while you're out and about in Bangkok, you might run into a driver who'll quote you a price, rather than use the meter. (This price is ALWAYS higher than what you'd pay for the metered ride, so insist on the meter or find another taxi. They're not legally allowed to do this, but some will try to get away with it.)

The one thing to remember when getting a taxi at the airport is that you will have to pay a small surcharge -- just because you got it from the airport -- but it's very minimal; around $1, if I remember correctly (perhaps less) and it's built into the fare at the end.

So short answer: no, $66 is a really terrible price for a taxi from the airport to central Bangkok. Don't do it -- join the taxi line and get one when you get there.

Hope this helps!

More like baht to the edge of Bangkok. No, not for a 45 minute ride, should have cost about 250-300 baht plus 50 baht airport taxi fee. USD 66 is about 2300 baht, you can go to Pattaya from Bangkok for that. Even a limo or sedan from the airport will only cost about 700-800 baht or so.

Agree with what everyone said - $66 is way too high.

to kola: a tip about taxi in Bangkok:

NEVER bargain when using a taxi in Bangkok - you end up paying more than you should be. Take a metered taxi. Tell the driver to put on the meter - NO METER, NO RIDE. If they are good and they don't try to cheat you (like.. take the long way round) and is helpful - then I will tip them, which is a nice gesture to drivers who are trying to make an honest living.

Its a good price for the driver but for you NO!. If you are asking because someone is offering you that ride turn him/her down.

Taxi from the airport is easily accessable. Upon arrival head down one floor and out to the exit you will find a queue for taxi. There will even be someone at the head of the queue to translate your destination to the taxi driver in case you are worried about communication breakdown.

A 45min ride to the city centre would cost about 300bth max including toll and airport surcharge and bad traffic. Always insist that the taxi uses the meter. If they claim its broken etc then tell them nicely to stop and get off ... there are always lots of taxis around.

If you have already taken the taxi and paid ... take it as a lesson learned.

Enjoy your stay in BKK!

No it is not, Where did you get that quote, if you go by the meter, it should cost you around 250 baht or cheaper. About $7.50 I think you can get it cheaper, watch out for the taxi Drivers and settle on the price before getting in the taxi. I always insist on going by the meter. What hotel are you going to if it is an expensive one they may have a limo service. do not deal with who ever gave you that $66.00 quote, they are only out to screw you.
Good Luck, ....Have a good time.

Sounds like a rip off - I prefer to book a hotel which has a courtesy car. I went to a hotel for 500baht and the courtesy car could have picked us up for 100 baht - one of lifes lessons !!
