Democrat: One who believes in a large central government, normally has socialistic domestic policy ideals (welfare isn't that bad and universal healthcare is good), more progressive social dogmas (pro-abortion), okay with gay marriage and looks out for others.

Republicans: States rights trump central government, which should be very small. Strong free-market ideals (the almighty dollar will take care of everyone as long as they make the money). Conservative social ideals (anti-abortion, no gay marriage).

Be your own party, don't let the party own you. Go with who you think would do the best job and who you think will do the country a service!

That's called an Independent.

Generally, Independents apply their brains more than either Republicans or Democrats

Don't lump yourself into either party. If you pay any attention, the parties do not represent the people any more, they represent themselves and no one else. No one is strictly one party. Anyone with more than three braincells will have certain opinions that are more left leaning, and certain opinions that are more right leaning. Don't be a party, be an independent with your own thoughts and opinions.
