it was a term to make fun of the followers of Christ..but I do not care about being called a Jesus freak, I would rather be a Jesus freak than any other type of freak ,and believe me I used to be a freak.

Someone who is a Freak for Jesus. Just like the word Christian means to be of Christ. Some take as a compliment and some don't a FREAK it could have been another more versatile adjective.

To me it means an imposible person who never admits that they are wrong. Like when someone complains about everything and when you tell them that they shouldn't complain. Then, they give you more reasons why they have a right to complain. Then I just say, "Jesus Christ"

As someone who claims to be a Jesus Freak, here is my explanation. It's a little long and ranty, but hang with me and I think I can clear it up for you.

According to the Bible, people were first called Christian in the city of Antioch about 40 A.D. or so. It was a term of ridicule, a lot like a certain "N word" some people use today, except instead of slurring someone because of their skin color, they were slurring people for trying to be kinda like Jesus Juniors. And just like certain parts of my country's history, anyone with that label on them was in danger of being killed for it. But back then they believed that following Christ and doing what he asked of them was more important than physical life. After all, if you are looking at living forever what's a few hours of suffering?

The problem is that in modern society the word Christian, like many words from back in the day, has taken on a different meaning. Now when someone says he or she is a Christian, they could mean anything from "I attend a particular church" to "My mother's mother wrote my name in a family Bible when I was born", or even "I am an American citizen".

That is where the term Jesus Freak comes in. It was used in America back in the '60s to describe the Christian counterculture. They were hippies, in a way, but they believed in Christ and what he taught. Some of them tried to follow what the early church did and set up communities where they shared what they had with each other. They were Christian, but they were different than what Christian had come to mean, and they didn't really care what polite society thought of them. They were extreme. And just like the old days, people came up with a derogatory name for them. They called themselves Jesus People. The rest of the world called them Jesus Freaks.

So people who believe the way they used to back in the early church, those of us who want to think and act like Christ so much that we are willing to die for what we believe, had lost our label because it had been diluted over the years. I wasn't part of the Jesus People movement but, to borrow a phrase, I dig where they were coming from. I'm not big on labels, but sometimes you have to describe yourself to people in a few words. So yeah, I'm a Jesus Freak.
