i've built a one switch button system for a mame system to operate 240v(ie. to the monitor) from a 12v supply(computer) wired up to the mains, but i've now found out its actually got a maxium swicthing voltage of 125v,( an oversight of a yank selling ebooks in the uk) and i can't find out which relay i need or what type of relay i need the one i used was dpdt 10a at 125vdc from radio shack, tried a search in google and don't know what am looking at, i anyone knows which relay i need could you post a link to it plz

Your amperage would still be the same or less than the 10a and all you would need then is a realay with the operating range of 240v. Now there are really 3 factors

1 the amp requirements. (said to be 10 you could use up to a 20a safely)
2 the voltage across the contacts. (this is the switch part that when on power crosses these points and when off power does not cross until the relay is activated.
3 the voltage that operates the relay. (power from your button to activate the relay)

Are you using 240v on all power to the relay or is the relay going to be operated by a 5V or 12V source from the computer?

I have built a few MAME cabinets and more electronic projects than I can count. Give me more details about your project needs and I will be glad to help (Even tho I am a Yank)

RS is probably the best place to look you need to check that the relay has the correct switching voltage 240v and the correct coil voltage 12v then it's a matter of size and how you are going to connect it up eg pcb or wired(din rail) I just googled "RS components" and up it came then click on rs electronics and look on the right side of the page near the bottom, industrial relays

The answer depends on the current you want to cut.
what is the power consumption of the equipment you want to operate under 230V.

If single phase, P=UI cos(φ)
A contactor might be more appropriate than a relay.

try www.rswww.com or farnellinone on the web or Maplins on the highstreet

look for a 230V relay reated at 10A - loads there to choose from

try rs components on the web. they have all the spec for their relays online and you should find one there that suits your needs.
