I was driving to work today and noticed that I could not read the billboard because it was in Spanish, is that weird or is it just me? When did this start happening? Is it going on everywhere?

just to let thasaintamour know, believe me I have traveled more than you and I am educated. You don't know me. But...I do live in America, english is the language. When in Rome do as the Romans do. Ever heard of that? Get over yourself and your anger issues. Sorry I don't have to learn Spanish. Just like Mexicans in Mexico don't learn English. Why should they?

Well, I am a Spanish-American, and I speak Spanish, but I only speak it at home, out in public I only english. Youre correct, you don't have to learn Spanish we need to learn English. I don't like this either. My grandparents worked thier butts off to learn English, all immigrants, including Hispanics need to learn English.

Well spanish is the2nd most popular languge in america. So it shouldn't be a surprise to you. In the city i live there is a street called handy street and there are like 2 billbourds with spanish on it and i've been living ther for 3 years and every year the billbourds have been lke that. So it's been going on for a long time now. Where i live, there are a lot of hispanics so that's why.

It started happening about the same time you started getting a choice when you called a company on the phone to be spoken to in English or Spanish.

I find the same in Spain, the Canary Islands and the Baleares.
Serious bit: I had to work in a different part of England and lived in Chester, the county town of Cheshire, through the week. Even in this archetypal county town, which couldn't be more English (apart from the Roman origins...) there were 'billboards' in the Welsh language only. Needless to say, this pis*ed me off no end. Even more annoying was receiving a utility bill (do you understand that in Am. Eng? - an invoice for electricity, gas, etc.) written in English, Welsh, Urdu and Hindi!!! I love foreign languages; but this was going too far.
Yours grumpily.

Money talks! The creator of those billboards are not nationals from another country. They are major American companies that are advertising and catering to a spanish speaking customer base that have proven to them that they have spanding power. Why else would American doctors and nurses learn to speak Spanish? why else would NBC buy a major spanish network channel? and why else would companies like Verizon, Target, Bank of America and major credit card companies (just to name a few) advertise and cater to them?

The hispanic population is now the largest minority in the country. It's natural for companies to market to this group by putting items in their own language. It's been going on for several years, but been becoming more prominent each year.

Union City, NJ.
places with large Hispanic populations have signs in Spanish, i think its cool. i also think American English will pick up more Spanish words eventually, the language will always change.

Where do you live? In some areas there are more signs in Spanish and it is uncommon to find one in English.

You're just ARROGANT in your obvious presumptions... and poorly educated I'm sure... let me explain...
I've been to more than half the world from Los Angeles to Buenos Aires... From New York to Cairo and from Paris to Istambul.. among just a few... and....wow!! when did it start happening???? So much advertising in English !!! OMG !!! but wait...!! in Turkish, Italian.. Greek, French and Taiwanese....
Sorry but you just come across as prejudiced on your post... Let me ask you... is it okey with you that people speak languages other than english in the World? Well... they do... how many languages do you speak? Obviously not Spanish... The world is not that big, we ALL need to co-exist in it. Immigration laws allow people to travel and live in other countries... in many parts of the world, some resort to do it illegally but if you ask them they will tell you that it is NOT by choice... some of these people feel they have no choice but to build their lives somewhere else...
And since you obviously feel that you're more entitled than others in the world, let me just remind you that you're sadly mistaking... by pointing out just how unfortunate it is that in our very own US soil we have plenty of infested ghettos by drugs and aids and citizens that feel they don't have a chance either... worsen by the fact that in lots of these cases they don't even want to work... That's without even including the victims of Katrina right now... uhmmm... maybe we shouldn't advertise to them in English either... since you're so concerned why don't you do something about them?
My advise, do some travelling and LEARN something, GROW as a HUMAN BEING, stop being PREJUDICED and become a world citizen. You have no right to judge anybody based on your presumptions. There are laws.. let it take care of things. The world does not need YOU and your ignorance to interfere ...believe me.
Good Day

You mean, when did it start happening that companies started advertising to Spanish speaking people, or when did it happen that you realized that you couldn't read Spanish?
