Hi Rachel,
The size of an average potato is about 80 to 90 calories.
Mashed, that would make about the size of a closed fist - a woman's.
A pat of butter is 50 calories. If you use half of that, it's 25 calories.
If you use skim milk, about 2 tablespoons would be about 20 calories.
So, all together, we have 90, 25 & 20.
Your serving of mashed potatoes is about 135 calories
Now, that's quite a low-fat portion of food. Also, as far as carbohydrates goes, it's low on the glycemic index. That means it's absorbed into your body slowly and doesn't turn into sugar.
Also, potatoes are high in potassium, which is very good for you
Just watch what you put on top of it. If you add gravy or butter, you will pile on calories & fat. If you don't add anything to it, then enjoy yourself.

It's also good to go really light on the butter and other dairy products-- use 2% milk and little or no butter and season them with horseradish, if you like it, and herbs. Cooking the potatoes with finely chopped onions adds flavor and cuts the calorie content as well.
Actually a closed fist-- at least my closed fist-- is more than I would want to eat as a side dish. Ice cream scoops come in sizes by the ounce and are a good way to control portions. Just be sure to level them off and you will be able to scoop and measure at the same time.

Depends on how much butter and cream you have in it?
Get a baked potatoe 5 ounces it is 125 calories. Better still get wild rice or brown rice or if dieting eat Cauliflower mashed with tiny bit of butter. Less calories than potatoe.

It is 32 calories per oz. for mashed potatoes. Don't obsess over it, however. One scoop of mash potatoes will not matter overall in your weight success and will balance itself out.
