That's dumb and childish....
Let them dig their own graves because people will be then be bugging them about the "wedding".

To really understand this situation you have to know "show people". Show people are very dramatic.
Personally I think the fake engagement idea is hysterical and genius.
They should top it off with a fake reception in a few months where they turn and kiss other people and then yell "gotcha" at their show people guests. Or she should show up in a tuc and he in a gown. It would make a really good practical joke for April fools day maybe. Of course if they recieved any gifts they would need to give them back.

If you think this is actually a dangerous move for them, I would recommend having them watch "Shall We Dance," with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. It seems weird to recommend watching a movie, yet the characters in that movie face a lot of the pressures that your friend and the other manager are facing and ended up making a similar. It might help them see the situation in another light, and also see that it could complicate life in ways they hadn't expected. It's worth a try; invite them over for a movie night!

That is one of the strangest, seemingly pointless things two people can do. Why? Why would someone do that? Act like they're dating. Why? Are they hideous? Are they really good looking people that are sick of other people asking them out? The lack of motive is killing me. YES, it has gone too far.

That's pretty dumb and stupid. But don't do anything. I wouldn't get involved in their games. Let them play whatever games they want. I would just look the other way and act like I didn't know what is going on!

It's ridiculous, but it's up to them. Don't get in the middle of their game, particularly if they aren't going to be seeing the people they're lying to once the shows are over.
Of course, if they get to the point where they're sending out fake invitations to a fake wedding...then I'd have a chat with one of them if I was very close to one or both.
But ultimately it's up to them, and if it blows up in their faces, well, that's their problem, too. Not yours.

yeah, that's crazy.
I mean, you can joke about getting married or engaged; but don't lie about it.
Eventually, people will figure it out and you'll just look dumb.
Anytime you date someone for a long time, you'll get that "When are you getting married?" question. You just have to giggle and say, "I don't know" or "In a few years"
But, you should not have to lie about something so life changing to please other people.

Don't do a thing! Let them fall down and pick themselves back up. They're digging themselves a really deep hole!

That's inappropriate as hell, because it could motivate folks to buy them a gift. Suggest this to them.

Perhaps they really are dating and don't want you to know for some unknown reason.
Good luck!

Nothing you can do.
It's up to them.
But it is really in poor taste if they lie about being engaged if they never were/will be.
