Do Australia's in general really dislike or hold a grudge against the English? Is it common enough that the average English visiter to Australia would get a few distasteful comments, or is it exagerated?

Some Australians can (god knows why) get very defensive about our convict heritage. (Personally I think the fact that a bunch of bread theifs created a country like this is something to be very proud of.) And this can sometimes seem like anti-English sentiment. However, in reality it has nothing to do with the English.

Other than that, you will find some rabid republicans who dislike The Queen and royal family (Im not a huge fan), but again, this doesnt extend to England as a country.

The very, very, very vast majority of Australians either like, or dont feel any strong feelings to the Brits. For the most part, we enjoy beating them at cricket but it's more of a friendly vivalry. Also, we enjoy stirring them about the weather in England and winding them up about dangerous animals in Australia, but it's all intended to be taken in good fun. The English are expected to laugh it off and give it right back to us. Only when one side doesnt, do feelings get hurt.

Probably the only time Ive ever seen something close to anti-English sentiment in Australia was when some English boys wrapped themselves in the English flag and walked along Bondi Beach singing/screaming Rule Britania. A lot of people didnt take to kindly to it, but in hindsight, that probably had more to do with the fact that they were being drunken, loudmouthed, obnoxious dickheads than being English.

NO - NOT AT ALL!

Where did you get such idea? If we are that bad - why do so many people want to come and visit or live here?

We don't care what country people are from as long as you treat us the way you want to be treated. Although we ARE a sarcastic bunch and it might be a bit of a shock when you are called a "bast**d" in the middle of what you think is a friendly gathering.

Just don't take everything personally and have a sense of humour. If you can do this - you will be fine.

No my cousin is from England and he came for a holiday over Xmas and he said he never had any anti English comments actually he goes to Spain a lot and said he gets comments there all the time.
Yes he got bit of a ragging over the ashes series but he took that in good fun and all in all had a great holiday and even said he felt more at home here than in Britain

Bring your sense of humour with no airs and graces and you will fit in perfectly. We owe you a debt for Yes Minister and the Office series, plus now for Little Britian so you've got a free pass at the moment. All you need to do is not whinge (Aussies grizzle about whinging poms) and you are in with flying colours. You would not get any distasteful comments from my perspective from what I have always observed.

No, it is not that bad. The average Australian does not hold a grudge against the English. Most of them are not decended from the convicts.

Australia is a true multi-cultural society with few problems. You are very welcome. There is no grudge or dislike of the English. Unfortunately, we tend to "tag" other countries with nick names and some people take offense, when none is intended. [Poms (English), Yanks (Americans), etc.] We don't take ourselves too seriously..

There is some ribbing of English people particularly when we are beating England in cricket, rugby, netball, soccer etc etc but it is friendly and not malicious. You will find bigots anywhere in the world, including Australia, but most Australians will treat you as they find you.

I think most of the comments, if any, are made tongue-in-cheek.
Many of us have British ancestors.
I must say Australians, on the whole, don't enjoy the company of whingers, boasters or people with no sense of humour. (No matter where they're from).
We will bluntly tell them just that, too.

The only anti-English sentiment I detect is usually anti-anti-Australian sentiment. If you Poms would just get over it we would all be a lot happier.
