These days you'd be hard pressed to find a cute girl who doesn't have a tattoo on her ankle, her shoulder, near her crotch, or the standard "tramp stamp" on her lower back. And if I had a nickel for every tribal arm band tattoo I've seen on guys trying to look hardcore, I'd be a rich man! Not to mention that every single town in this country with a population of over 5000 people has a tattoo shop! So what's the deal? If EVERYBODY tries to be individual by getting tattoos, then what's the point? Or is that the whole idea? To be "individual" like everybody else?

If they're so mainstream, then people must like them for a reason. I think it's partly because of shows like "Miami Ink". People who previously never considered getting a tattoo because it was "too hardcore" realized that there are other reasons to get a tattoo besides looking tough, like marking milestones in their lives. There is really nothing wrong with having one, some people just like to make their bodies into artwork (beautiful artwork if done right). In my opinion getting a tattoo doesn't really affect your individuality.

P.S. My town's population is 7000, and we don't have a tattoo shop :-)

Actually, as an artist and as a modification artist, I can put it to you like this-with out being a bit defensive. Concider tattoo'd person world wide-modern primitives, not trend setters. Tattoos and piercings are nothing new. They can be used as modification, beautification and destructive. Depends on who holds the opinion. Some have meaning, others don't, some have purpose, others will not. Instead of seeing it as "mainstream" see it as a means and ways for a person that is controlled by society to step out of taht control, and control their body and how it looks. What you-or the person next to you feel is your own opinion, as this is mine. So you really can't expect to get the "right answer"...

i have never gotten a tattoo with the purpose of being an individual, nor to fit in with a certain crowd and i have never gotten one to "express myself" as so many people are fond of saying. (i feel there are better ways to express one's self than with a tattoo) everybody gets tattooed for different reasons but i love the art of them and they are kindof like bookmarks from my life, they mark particular feelings or memories for me.
while crappy tattoos are a dime a dozen truly amazing tattoos are far less common tho they are becoming more popular. i love my tattoos, i took a long time deciding on exactly what i wanted and why i wanted it and finding the right artist for me.

i see people with horrible crappy tattoos and i just shrug, smile or cringe on the inside and know that i am lucky to have art and not junk. some people are satisfied with horrible tattoo work and that's fine with me.

i dont think its necessarily to be "individual" as you put it. although there are a lot of people who do get them on a whim just to be cool, there are still a lot of people who get them because they have some kind of meaning and importance behind them. tattoos that are significant to the wearer fascinate me because there's always a story and it's usually an interesting one. in conclusion, yeah they are getting a bit too common because a lot of people are getting them for the wrong reasons, hence all of the questions on here about tattoo removal. it's ridiculous if you ask me.

they are not so edgy as they used to be, when only true tribal people, enlisted sailors, bikers and such got them. why bother and why be stuck with one if you are going to change your out look in the future, it does not seem liberating to me but perhaps it could turn out to be more "baggage" to carry around. This is an impermenent world things always change no matter what you do.
