Its tons of fun. 150+ on an empty road, its all going well. Then the guy youre racing over compensates for something, or hits a rock, or hits a pothole, or even just looks away for a second and next thing you know your 3000lb has moved a 8000+ pound trailer 20 ft and ripped the entire top off the car (and ripped the top of your girlfriend in the passenger seat, but you wont find that out for a couple weeks because theyre still using the jaws of life to pull your unconscious body out).
I got pulled over once doing 144 in a 70. The cop told me if he ever saw me going so much as 1 over again he'd arrest me. I'd driven the route a couple times and made sure it was safe, no cars, no debris, perfect for those speeds. 'Responsible speeding' if you'll go for that term.
About a month later I started working in insurance claims. The thing at the top is the second call I took-I'll never forget it. The kid was careful, did everything right, but its just not possible to control a car that isnt actually touching the ground.
__
Smart street racing doesnt exist. Minimizing variables means going to the track where there are fewer variables and much more control of them.

My old street car was parked on the side of the road (legally) in a 30mph zone. Girl in a Honda Civic was going an estimated 60mph. Only 60-shouldnt be a big deal. She clipped my bumper slightly, it spun her car causing her to T-bone mine. Moved my much heavier and larger car 10 ft into another one, pushed it foward a bit, and destroyed her car. Worst part was, she'd taken off her seatbelt for a second to check on her kid in the back. Due to that, she was flung foward just before the airbag opened. When we went outside you could see the red mark where her head had cracked the windshield before her back was snapped by the airbag deploying into her stomach which was up against the steering wheel.

I bet if you asked at the local PD, they could tell you of a drag strip near you that the police in some areas have opened on certain days or times just for this purpose. Racing down the street has never been a smart thing to do. You put the general public in great danger. Most of these kids have a lot of money to piss away, and no experience to go with it. By openong and operating these drag strips the police may stop an inexperienced idiot from killing himself or someone else. There is a lot more to consider than just your desire to go fast. Herein lies the #1 problem. You think of nothing else.

Drag racing is very dangerous, and if not done properly say you just go out there and prematurely start drag racing without any training or experience or even protection such as for your head and so on, you could be killed, or kill someone else. Cars are not a toy, and the idea of a teenager etc. just getting behind the wheel of a car anytime is scary enough for me. It's not safe, the cops are trying to protect you. If you want to put yourself at risk do it by skydiving or going on a thrill ride, don't put everyone else in danger. If you have these types of feelings and your 28, then that's even crazier hopefully you don't have any children you are setting a bad example for. Your an adult, the choice is yours, good luck not getting caught, and please if you choose to do it, then go out somewhere, where there is no one.

>I'm 28 years old and I still haven't had that V8 yet and I really want to speed and burn rubber at some point with one, but without the risk of getting a ticket.<
May I suggest going to a Drag Strip?

They'd rather take away your fun now than make the death notification to your family later. If you really want to burn that kind of rubber, check around and see if there is a race track or someplace you can go. Get off the streets.
Emergency Services is tired of cleaning up after you and your friends. You may think you're God's gift behind the wheel, but when some mother and her three children step out from between two cars in front of you, the consequences are horrible. Is it really worth it so you and your friends can get your jollies?

When I was in my teens and early 20's I learned to drive fast from my then boyfriend who was a stock car driver.
We took his fast car (not the stock car) out to an area near Palmdale that had beautiful streets built, but no houses, and pushed it up to 150.
Whoever said the car isn't touching the ground is absolutely right. You can feel the front end floating off the ground.
It's fun, it's exhilirating, and it will turn you into a red smear on the highway in less than a minute if you screw up.
I thank God for protecting me. I still think about how unbelievably stupid that was and how incredibly lucky we were.

You need to spend a few weekends volunteering in the ER of
busy community hospital. Your question will be answered in a way you'll never forget.
You have the urge for speed and burning rubber get into racing and get out on a track.

Because those kids grew up and took an oath to uphold the law. In the past 2 days alone there have been several people hurt and killed from street racing.
Find a closed course or race track and get your thrills there. Leave the rest of us with our families and lives intact and stay off our streets.

Because it is dangerous and people get killed. Go to Infineon Raceway near Vallejo if you want to drag race. They have Wednesday night grudge nights. For a few bucks, you can race legally and safely.
Yes, I was young and stupid at one time. In my youth, I used to drive very fast in my Plymouth Roadrunner and on my motorcycle. I got real lucky. Three of my friends were not so lucky and are now serving life sentences at the Mt. View cemetery.

it's because they can kill themselves and others. I know at least 10 people who have rolled their cars because they were going too fast, and the roads where I lived were narrow and winding.
If people want to drag-race, they need proper supervision so if something does go wrong they can get immediate medical care.
They also need to be in a place where the public is not in any danger.
