It's just a doggie thing - he's pounding down the area like he would have to if he were outside in the grass to make a "nest."

Scientists believe that they are looking around to see if they can sit there butt down and they move around the debris to make a comfortable spot. They are checking for predators and checking if it is just safe to rest. Most dogs do it , wolves do it too. They have to be on guard even when there sleeping

The same reason you move around in your bed until you get comfortable , your dog is trying to get in the right position before laying down.

Since the dogs' ancestors were once wild, they slept on grass and twigs and stuff, so it wasn't comfortable. Because of that, they would "stomp" on there sleeping spot so it would be more bearable. I guess the instinct was passed down.

All dogs do this, in the wild they did this to find their scent in a particuler area where they were bedding down for the night, it is an instinct from when they were still wild.
