I got a call today from David's Bridal. The bridesmaids dress style my future step daughter picked out for our wedding in April 2008 is being discontinued. So, in order to get the dress she wants, I need to order it soon, before they stop producing it. (On the positive side, it will be cheaper now)
My question is: she is 13 and is going through puberty. I've never had a teen daughter before and I have no clue how many sizes larger I should order, to be safely sure that the dress will still fit in April. I'm aware alterations will need done no matter what...but I also know it is easier to go smaller than to have a too-tight dress let out...
Any women who have daughters this age? I need some intelligent, adult advice.

I'm going to talk to her about it this Thursday (when she comes to our house)...but I know when she put on this style of dress, it fit her body type very well, was flattering, and she felt comfortable and pretty in it. For a young teen girl, it can be tough to find something she really feels good in...so I don't want to try to get her to buy a different gown.

Definitely get one two sizes bigger. If she doesn't go through a growth spurt between now and April, it is always easier to take a dress in than to let it out, as you said. However, I remember when I was about her age, my mom had to order costumes for the dance team I was on, and she measured me and everything, but by the time they got there, I was about 3 inches taller! We also had a problem with the size 6 tap shoes, since my feet grew to a 7 1/2 by the time they got there, like 4 weeks later...

That's really hard to say. If the rest of her family is tall and her mother and grandmothers are fairly well-endowed, I would go up two sizes. If they're the opposite, then I'd only go up one.
When I was 13, I still looked like I was about 10, and that didn't change much until I was about 15, so if she's like me, then she'd only need one size up. But say, my sister, on the other hand, is only 14, and she could pass for 16. So she would've needed two sizes up.
Personally, unless the dress is one heck of a bargain, I think I would just let it go, and let her pick out another dress as it gets closer.
I understand what you mean about it being hard for a teenage girl to pick something she feels good in, but you have to remember that teenage girls change their minds alot, and what happens if you buy it now, and by the time January rolls around and she's being fitted, she thinks it's childish? You won't be able to return it, since it was discontinued, and you'd have to buy a second dress.

Her pediatrition can give you an idea of how much she is supposed to grow and that should make it easier. Remembering 13, my size didn't really change in anything, just filled out a bit more and wasn't so straight. I would go up 1 size, unless her pediatrition thinks she is going to grow much more. You don't want to get too big because it becomes much harder to alter, and sometimes pieces have to be added because a whole new pattern is basically being created. 2 sizes max, but 1 size should be ok.

Depends how much money you want to spend and what type of 13 year old she is. As they are all different and they can change within 2 minutes. I Pods make up money jewelry phone (pre paid so there are no big massive bills) clothes diarys DVD's CD's(latest top 20) hand bag with a wallet as they are growing up and want to feel independent Thats a bit of a list thats things that i would buy my 13 year old siter and i live in Australia

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!
Yes, I'm a guy and no, I don't have a daughter. But hopefully my two-cents is still worth something...
I'm just wondering whether or not you and your fiance have spoken to your step-daughter about this. I'm sure that she wants to look "absolutely perfect" in her dress and extensive alterations to an over-sized dress could render the dress unrecognizable. She may agree that it would be better to purchase a dress as reasonably close to her size as possible and then altered. What does the bridal shop recommend as far as how soon before the wedding a dress should be purchased?
Good luck!

To be safe I would go with 2 sizes larger... It is much easier to get a dress taken in than try to make it bigger.
The can have huge growth spurts in puberty and you never know how much she will grow, definately make sure she has plenty of room around the bust area - that would be my biggest concern.

My daughter is 11 and really starting to sprout. In your situation, I'd order 2 sizes larger.

Absolutely 2 sizes larger.
The dress can be taken in, but you cannot add on more fabric if it's too tight.

i'll say that when i was 13, i stopped growing in height and my girth grew very slowly until i was 16.
but it depends on her body type and her parents body type. if her mother is big chested, then you may want to go two sizes up. but if she is slim and small, then one size or no size should suffice.

I don't have a daughter her age however I make costumes for theatre and its much easier to go bigger then smaller. I hate having to add on to something small. Go bigger it will make it less stressful for the tailor to make take it in.
