Because they go to the extreme of interpreting and behaving literally according of the precepts of the Torah and the Talmud. The Torah contains extremely wise and useful rules as far as hygiene, diet, and general behavior are concerned for a tribe LIVING IN PERMANENCE IN A DESERT. Why do you think we always cover our head. Spend some hours in a desert bareheaded and you will have the answer.
However many thousands of years have gone by and for a group of modern people living in a city some of these precepts do not longer hold. The Hassidim community however begs to differ and sometimes goes to extremes in order to defend their opinions.

That is actually not true.

The vast majority of Charadim recognize the state of Israel.

They vote, they pay taxes, many even serve in the military and government.

Their are groups like Satmar that refrain from these things and do not take any money from the government in return, but they are not the majority.
