I assume this was quite some time ago ?

I think it demonstartes that people will go to any lengths to try & prove their point, whatever it may be.

I have never heard of this. You ask what lesson we can learn, but I hope we have already learnt the lesson that was needed and that is to have respect for our fellow human beings even if they look a little different from ourselves. This is similar to the way the Elephant Man was treated and I guess it was in much the same period of history. I hope we have come a long way since then.
