Someone just asked me 'so you believe God exists. Why?' I was like 'why not?'

well, setting aside my religion (which is Islam), what I believe is you always need someone to guide you along the path to your destiny. Like you need parents to tell you things you should know about everything, you need teachers to guide you through all years of your life. Just like that, I believe I need someone, a superpower who knows everything and to which nothing is hidden, a God, to guide me through all the phases of life, to tell me what is good for me and what isn't and if something isn't good for me, why is it so!

I was going to committ a real sin a month ago and i swear there was nothing that could stop me from doing that sin except for one thing which is the fear of God. I am sure if it hadn't been for that fear of God, I would have committed that sin right away and messed up my whole life. So what's so wrong with believing on a God when it's just for good, nothing else?

well, please don't mind it, I just have alot on my mind and these questions are bugging me too much so I wanna clear it all up. I'm not saying not believing in a God is not right. I just want to know what's wrong with believing on a God?

Please don't bother to answer if you think I'm mad or something bragging about controversial issues. I just want to know what people think about this, nothing personal.

I don't want you to believe what I believe so don't say I'm trying to impose my thoughts on you. I'm happy and contended with my life and religion and I'm glad you are, too! that was just a question that needed answers.

People tell me all the time that it is sick to believe in God. What they don't bother to think is it could be just as sick not believing in God as it is to believe it.

A mercer, that's exactly the point I was trying to make. When I have no problem with people who don't believe in God and I'm equally best friends with people from other religions as I am with people of my own religion, how can others say I haven't got a mind to think on my own? When I don't have a problem with what they believe, why do they seem to have a thing against what I believe? I have never tried to impose my beliefs on anyone but I can tell you the names of more than hundreds of people who were trying to convince me into not believing God. The thing is, if a muslim tells his beliefs to someone else, you take it as him trying to push his beliefs on you. And when someone belonging to some other religion tries to impose his beliefs on a muslim, you take it as something perfectly alright. Why the discrimination?

If you want to believe in a god or gods then go ahead. Some people need to have that belief. However, some people will not believe or believe in different god/gods than you. The problem is when people want to have their religion pushed on others. Some people will discriminate or even attack people of a different belief. Some will want the laws made to reflect their beliefs even if not all people have the same beliefs. Some even want science changed or even suppressed because it contradicts their beliefs. There are also some who use their belief to justify their crimes. Some people will kill and rob because they believe that their religion condons it. They believe that their horrible actions are actually doing good. It is these people that the non-believers have a problem with. Granted, there are some non-believers who are guilty of the same crimes. However, many people want religion to be a personal thing and not something that is pushed upon other people.

Some people do not believe in a god and are completely capable of not committing crime and they are also moral people. Trust the strength within yourself first. Hunter S. Thompson once said, "Call to god, but row away from the rocks." In other words, you have the strength to avoid doing bad. Use it.

The way I look at it, believe what you want to believe as long as you do not expect others to share your belief, you do not push your belief on others, and you do no harm with your belief.

ADDED:
I do not believe that anyone should push their beliefs on others. I can understand what you are talking about though. I have seen many different people treating muslims as second class citizens (or worse). There are many people on yahoo answers that are pretty brutal when it comes to those of the muslim faith. However, they will completely ignore anything that is brought up that puts their own religion in a bad light.

Some people have something called religious supremacy. They believe they are right and all others are wrong. Because of this, they believe that they are right in whatever they do and everyone else is wrong in whatever they do. I saw in at least one answer to your question, a person basically telling you that you have the wrong belief. That person does not have anything to back that up with. He just believes you are wrong and that he is superiour because he believes he is right. He will therefore tell you are wrong but never possibly accept that he may be wrong.

There's not really anything wrong with believing in God. If that's what you want to believe, that's your right. But when you share and advocate your belief, it is also the right of people like me to criticize and point out the holes in theistic logic, of which there are many. And if theists don't like this, then they should keep their beliefs to themselves or find a more logical belief system.

What sin was that, not that it's any of my business.

With atheism, the definition of sin changes greatly and the idea of things like "purity" are regarded as they should be - as utter nonsense.

The problem with belief in God, or belief in general can be summed up in the words of Voltaire: "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." Belief in God can be a cover for all sorts of horrible acts - a problem that seem especially acute among Muslims, though all religions have their militants.

Belief in God can be easily manipulated either for political gain or financial and because a leader claims to adhere to one religion or another, they are often not watched with scrutiny.

The truth is most people (other than sociopaths) don't need a god to tell them what is right. Humans have an innate natural moral compass that tells us that murder and theft is bad and that helping others is good.

If you do need a good to help you behave, then you truly are a depraved person.

Sorry you feel so insecure you need an imaginary being to guide you, as you compare yourself to a child. I grew up; I no longer need a Daddy or a Mommy to tell me what to do. Perhaps someday you'll develop the strength of character needed to live life without this crutch.

Since you don't identify this "sin," all I can say is that there's nothing wrong with more than half the things religions define as "sin." Lust, envy, most of the so-called seven deadlies are just normal human behavior that churches define as wrong to control you by making you feel guilty for being human.

Of course, belief often leads to excuses for things that are sins to nearly everyone - I've never heard of an atheist suicide bomber, have you? Plenty of Islamic ones though....

You were more afraid of "God" than you were of messing up your whole life?

I appreciated the respectful tone in which you posted here, and I hope you'll take this as a respectful response. Your "whole life" is extremely valuable. It is not something to be casually thrown away, as you implied you'd have done were it not for your "fear of God". You really should think about how valuable your life is to you.

In your middle paragraph you wrote that you need a God to tell you what is good and what isn't good for you. But surely you've noticed that there isn't any God telling you any such thing. You're making those decisions, sometimes based on what other people are telling you, but never on anything any "God" is telling you. "God" never says anything, for the simple reason that he doesn't exist.

All-in-all, that belief in God isn't doing the things you suggest you need it to do for you, and your guidance seems insufficiently based on the immense value of your life. I sincerely hope that you'll look more carefully at your situation, and come to value your life much more than you currently do.

Either way, my best to you.

Good for you, you've found something that works for you. In a similar situation I always use empathy instead of fear of God (I'm an atheist). I believe in do unto other as unto myself and all that. I have no problem with people that want to believe in God and the whole speil, I just don't want it in public schools taught as the only truth. If my kids want to hear about that, they can go to any church that turns them on when they are older.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with believing in a higher power. For many people it is a saving grace. When that belief is used as an excuse or reason to commit atrocities or if it's forced on others, then there is a problem -- but that problem is with the person, not the belief.

What is wrong with believing in God?

There is actually allot of things wrong with it.

To start, believing in God opens you up to interpretation of his will for your life.

You may believe that Allah wants you to live a peaceful life and help others, that is a wonderful thing. But there are thousands of Clerics that teach that Allah want Muslims to clean the world of infadels. Thankfully you aren't listening to them now, but what if you are convinced that God is speaking through one of them in the future?

Your belief in God will eventually lead to trouble. It usually does. Sometimes it causes people to shun family members. What would you do if your brother or sister told you they didn't believe in God any longer? Would you shun them? What if they told you they had become a worshiper of Satan? Would you still fellowship with them?

Belief in God has historically been a dangerous thing.

You are free to believe as you wish...as long as you don't try to have those beliefs validified by the federal government and turned into laws which I must follow.

I'll keep my atheism out of your churches...and you keep your religion out of my government, schools, and federal buildings....sound fair???

Because, believing in god or any god is silly, foolish and quite shallow. There is much more to life and the world than "God did it".
It is also quite silly to believe in something that you cannot even prove exists until you die. You might as well believe in the Purple People eater, teh FSM, flying unicorns or that bigfoot causes earthquakes.
