I am looking for an affordable flash that works on a nikon d80. Somewhere between 100-$200 is a good price range.

Your best bet would be Nikon's SB600. It falls into your price range and offers the most for the money. It's part of Nikon's iTTL flash system, had horizontal and vertical tilt, a motorized zoom flashhead, and is a proven performer. The SB800 has more advanced capabilities, but the SB600 will suit most photographer's needs.

Your best flash is a good fast lens, such as the 70-200mm 2.8 and the 28-70mm 2.8 as well as a good camera that handles noise well at ISO 800 and above. I say this because, you should not be firing a flash durring performances. It can be quite disturbing to the performers and disruptive to the audience.. Also using available light shots adds a great deal to the mood portrayed by your images. Creating a photo that looks just like the atmosphere it was shot in instead of adding artificial lighting that does not accurately recreate the mood. Getting into photographing stage performances requires very different equipment than you use for a typical event. You become a journalist and you have a story to tell and you must recreate the mood accurately to give folx the feeling that they were actually there. Hope this helps

Your Owner's Manual should list Accessories for your camera. Buy the top of the line flash for your camera. Its unlikely that you'll "outgrow" it any time soon. If you buy an entry-level flash now, chances are in 6 months you'll be wishing you'd bought the top one.

If Nikon offers an off-camera flash bracket buy it.

Yes, there are several after-market brands that may be as good as the Nikon flash. The Nikon flash, however, was designed for the Nikon cameras. That takes the worry out of compatibility.

IMO its always better to have a feature you may not use than to find yourself needing it and not having it.
