I would use this verse along with "The love of money is the root of all evil" and explain how money can surely trap a person if they are not careful. When their eyes are on "things" rather than God-- or on themselves rather than God this can be scary.

I may combine with it the parable of the Soils.
Mat 13:18 Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Mat 13:20 But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
Mat 13:21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
Mat 13:22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
Mat 13:23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold some sixty, some thirty.

In the Old Testament wealth and material goods are considered a sign of God's favor (Job 1:10; Psalm 128:1-2; Isaiah 3:10). The words of Jesus in Mark 10:23-25 provoke astonishment among the disciples because of their apparent contradiction of the Old Testament concept (Mark 10:24.26). Since wealth, power, and merit generate false security, Jesus rejects them utterly as a claim to enter the kingdom. Achievement of salvation is beyond human capability and depends solely on the goodness of God who offers it as a gift (Mark 10:27).

this does not mean a rich man cannot get into heaven. Some will be rich financially and others wont be. MOney is not evil, its the love of money that is evil. IT is hard to get a rich man into heaven tho as they have a love of money that leads to greed and pride, and total self sufficancy, without realizing God gave it all to them, and God can take it all away. The Bible says more on this subject too and its such blessing to hear it and know its true. What God says is true. He never lies. Anyhow, the point is that we arent to think we are all that and so self sufficient that we have no need ot GOd, whether we are finally set or still struggling WHen we thin like that, we will follow self and self desires, pleasures, etc, and not find God. When we realize all that matters is God and finding Jesus as our saviour, and we desire to live only for GOd, we put away selfishness and know that allwe have comes from God, whether we know it or not. all of it. And God so easily can take it all away. So you become fully dependant on God, knowing only He knows whats best and we are caleld to love Him and obey HIM> thats how we stay in His protective, redemptive care. What good is it for a man to gain the words riches, only to lose it for hell?????
What matters is God and HIs Holy Bible and the full teachings of Jesus Christ, and then to obey what we know.
God is so good, all the time he is good. Great question. love to see your answers. May those of God respond, FOr those not of God that only want to hassle, we still love you and pray. God hasnt give up yet... nor do we.

If one is fortunate enough to have in someway ,either through hard work and entrepenurial skills ,or even inheritance,attained wealth. It is not the wealth that will buy your way into heaven. It is the same ,rich or poor.As Paul says,"It is by grace that you are saved ,through faith ,and not by works least any man boast.It is a gift of God."
One cannot earn or buy a gift .Otherwise it is wages.So if one is rich,you need to use your riches wisely enjoy them but make sure to give back to God who blessed you.

Basically, People who have a lot of money have a difficult time understanding the need for reliance in God.
Kirk Cameron did a segment about this on an episode of "The Way of the Master".

It is impossible to talk to anyone successfully about this section in Jesus' teaching, without them doing what He had the disciples do: go out in the world with no money and find out for themselves. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't done this myself. During that time, I lacked for nothing: clothing, shelter, food, even air-conditioning and heat, and medical treatment if necessary! You'll never know until you follow Him with yor whole heart...

It's preposterous order to teach/preach first, learn after.
Every verse has to be put in context with other verses.
Jesus usually saith and answereth two allegoric things;
For Jesus plays two parts: Son of man & Son of God.
In this verse it's notably "answereth again", a 2nd tme.
For there's 2 sorts of "them" in them vs them: Heb 10;
And there's 2 sorts of children compared in Mt 13 also.
But "high-minded" sorts "oppose them-selves" on high,
which is notably where there's wickedness: Ephesians 6.
So then, the "higher" exhortations are:
- be neither of them vs them, but "us-ward"
- "be no more children', neither of 2 sorts
For God said: let us make man, not children nor men;
And us-ward is accounted as salvation, not themward.
Not to menton "escape" is via "give more earnest heed",
and e-life of eternal salvation is "through Jesus --> Christ".
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

Well..this proves that the disciples had money when they left their work and went to follow Jesus. They obviously had it and were shocked that it was being shown to be a problem to their spiritual lives.
Only a problem for those who "trust" in their money...instead of trusting in the ability of their God.
You can only have One Lord on the throne of your heart.

the problem isn't with the money but where we place it.
do we tithe the whole 10% or what we feel like giving?
is the money what fills our homes or ADONAI'S grace?
do we give only when we have it or even if it hurts?
do the poor get more than our prayers?
do you only associate with money or with anyone who has it?
thats the problem with money and riches. so few can break
its clutches. gold doesn't mean love.
