Hi.

I weight 265, 5'11", and I'm looking for a mountain bike to ride daily...approx 10 miles a day.

I do not know the first thing about mountain bikes other than the tires need to support my weight.

Do they make bikes for big guys? Maybe a wider seat, not so thin that they normally come with ??

Thanks.

I would go to your local bike shop and get fitted to a bike. Box store bikes will fail in a short time due to their poor quality. Due to your weight the bike shop might recommend a tire change from what is oem on the bike. Once you get over the 200lbs, a change to a stronger tire with more volume is a better way to go as the smaller tires will feel un-stable and need too much air pressure. As far as the seat goes the seat should be fitted to your tail bones. A friend of mine (280lbs) was fitted to a nice bike this past spring. The bike shop swapped out the rims and tires free of charge for a set more suitable for his weight.

You're just a bit heavier than me (I'm like 230 lbs, about the same height).

Check the Kona Hoss, but there are a lot of others that can work. Don't go for the lightest stuff, but rather for things that are strong.

The most important things to check for are frame, fork and wheels. Make sure you get a wheelset of 32 or 36 spokes. Most wheelset are like that, but Mavic has some nice looking, light wheelset that either are too light and squirmy (not good, I had some Mavic Crosslands, which I liked until I tried another cheaper wheelset with 32 spokes, what a difference), or light, strong and expensive (you can get better hubs and a complete package for about the same price).

About saddles, wider does not make them more confortable. It actually depends on your sitbones. I have a big behind, but I went from a wide 155mm saddle to a 135mm one and feel better. It's sometimes just trial and error on that stuff.

Any mountain bike will work for you. They all can handle your weight and more. Standard wheels and tires on these bikes are fine as well. Check seats out when you go looking.

Try the Kona Hoss bike. Built sturdier for big guys(clydesdales).

Seats are easy to switch out if you need more coverage. Good luck!

My brother is not quite as heavy as you, but not a small guy, and he purchased the Trek 7200 because he felt it was secure for his size. It's a great bike and he loves it.
