Your boss doesn't get a heads up. All you can do is tell him that you will be using your maternity time to decide whether you will be returning to work.
You can't be expected to make a decision of that caliber before you give birth. You have no idea the bond you will feel after your baby is born.
It's illegal for your boss to pressure you into deciding. If you live in the US, you have a legal right to your maternity leave and a guarantee of a job with the same wage, in a similar position when you get back. You can take extra time that is unpaid maternity leave. Ever state is different. Contact your human resources department to find out how much time you could take off without losing your job. Then tell your boss how much time you plan to take off. Letting him know that you have the right to change your mind after the baby is born.
You may find out that you need to work for your own sanity.

I stayed home. I loved it. But I had "just a job." Not a career that I was in love with. So, staying home was a wonderful thing for me. You need to decide what is best for you and the new baby.
good luck!

Just tell your boss you will be back to work. You can always change your mind and you probably will once your baby comes. If you want to stay home with your child, you have lots of options. I am a stay-at-home mother of 2 (2 year old and 4 year old). My husband and I could not afford to live on just his income so I had to find ways to make $ while staying at home. I took classes to get certified in family child care and have been doing that for 4 years. I also sell Mary Kay Cosmetics which eventually will be my sole source of income. I also work on Saturdays at a consignment store - which I LOVE! Do what is best for you and your child. If you want to stay home and raise your child - you should. You will regret it later if you choose to go back to work just because you told your boss you would be back.

Discuss the situation with your husband or significant other.. Weigh out the pro's / con's of working vs. staying at home... Or discuss with your boss if you can have flex time or work from home for awhile.. Also, check out what maternity leave has to offer and what it doesn't. I'm a SAHM mother of 2... My boys are 1 yr. and 3 yrs. I just got a job at night to help with daily expenses and for my sanity.. You may find that working is a stress reliever too... It's not all fun and games staying home with a baby ! Good luck

Go back to work, work harder and proof to your boss that you are still capable of handling family and workload. In the mean time employ a nanny to look after your precious baby. As it is safe and common for busy working parents to leave their babies under the care of a well trained nanny for the first few months.

Thats somethign you honestly have to decide for yourself. The right answer isnt the same for all fo us. I am "blessed" to be disabled where I CAN'T work outside my home. However, as much as I don't WANT to work, Im afraid if I werent I would HAVE to in order to make sure the bills got paid.

Say yes - you can always change your mind a month before you are due to go back - personally I was going to, but found I just couldn't leave my baby with someone else!

i would have loved to stay at home with my kids instead of going back to work but didn't have the money. if you are married and you feel that your husband makes enough for you to stay and he is ok with it then go for it!! it would be so worth it and if in a few years you get antsy to get back to work at least you had that special time w/ your new baby.

tell him your coming back...he can bite the bullet. If your still early in pregnancy then there is no reason that he needs to no now, and he should understand if in the end you decide to go the other way...your a first time mama..how can he expect you to make that decision right now? Make him wait.

I've got 3 kids, keep your job cuz you'll regret letting it go. If it's too hard to leave your little one then quit later.

Yes, roll off the delivery table, and head back to the office. That's dedication right there.
