you may not return a passport, of any country, you paid for? it is yours now,
as far as you not wanting to be an UK citizen? that is a whole different story,
the passport is yours now to keep , what you do with it? is your personal property,
but do keep in mind? one never know what one will need in the future,
by refusing it? which you may not do, first of all, since you asked for it ..
now? perhaps you are talking about citizenship? paper work, paper work ............
come back if you have different reasons to tell ?

I sent back my old passport to get a new one and the old one came back with about an inch chopped off the top right hand corner. This apparently makes it invalid.

Let me put it this way. Find out legally what you should do lest your 'unwanted' passport or it's number ends up in the hands of terrorists. If they used it, and it lead all the way back to you..then guess who would be talking to the police anti-terrorist squad?

Why would you want to? I am sure you can if there was an error somehow but if not they will still charge you for it because you have applied and they have worked on it.

Best to contact the passport office.

The whole passport system doesn't work like that! What harm does it cause by keeping it?

Why??? You don't get your money back..why not just keep it until it runs out and not renew it.

Unless you are giving up UK citizenship?
