How do I lock the TV so that it can only be turned on or off by remote control. The little boy I nanny for has made turning on and off the TV a game. It is soooo annoying! I need to know that I can have at least a little control over him! Thanks!

I don't think it's possible to lock the TV so you can't turn it on and off from the button on the TV, but what you could do is, if it's OK with his parents or whoever owns the TV, you could put a small piece of cardboard and some black electrical tape over the on/off switch, disabling it from getting pushed by little fingers. His parents would probably thank you for it, as repeatedly turning the TV on and off can blow out the picture tube.

Some sets have an option in the service menu for keypad lockout. This is generally used for public TV sets, like in the doctor's office lobby, so folks cannot screw with the TV. You would need to know the proper access codes, and keystrokes on the remote to gain access to that feature.

Since it is not your TV I would not even try that, since there are many other adjustments which could be adversely effected by accessing the service menu. This menu is meant for service personnel.

He may be asking for attention, or may not like the program he is watching, if he is even turning it off while children's programming is on. Or he may just be trying to be playful.

Talk to his parents about what he is doing. Ask if you can see the user manual for the TV. If the TV is a fairly new model, there is a setting where you can lock the buttons on the TV from being pushed, so that it can only be turned on using the remote. I think it's in the "Parental Controls" settings menu.

Meanwhile, if possible, try to keep him in a playpen or something he cannot get out of. If you have to, strap him in his car seat on the floor.

His parents are paying you to entertain and care for him, not to watch TV. He's telling you to pay attention to him. If you were working in a factory you would not be watching TV so why is this job any different?

talk to the parents and maybe while you are watching him they will let you unplug it and than you need to ask if the will put a child proof plug cover over the outlet so he will not try to plug it in himself.
