We are moving in 3 weeks and want to put a fireplace in our new home- I like the traditional mason installed fireplaces but heard that the cost is very expensive! The newer townhomes have gas fireplaces and they seem to be nice?? Do any of you regret getting a nice gas fireplace instead of paying thousands more for a real fireplace with a chimney? I'd rather save the money if a gas one would do the trick for the house- I want the new home to be classy and I especially love a fireplace on Christmas morning with the family! Thanks for your help with this one! :)

We have had gas in 2 out of the 3 homes we have built and wouldn't go back to woodburning. In fact we actually had to pay more for the gas in this newest house we are in. In the winter, we have it on every night. It's up to you and what you wish to pay in order to get the most realistic look. Ours are realistic enough that people ask if it's wood or not. An added cool feature besides not having to clean it is the remote. Spend some time picking the right "logs".

You can get very nice and realistic gas fireplaces. We have a "real" chimney with brick hearth, the whole nine yards but installed gas logs just for the ease of not dealing with ash and wood. All we miss is the crackle and smell. Most new construction is going toward gas aswell, a true brick chimney is rarely built these days unless in super high end homes. They are just too expensive. I would install a raised hearth and mantle though and not just install the unit into the wall. It looks more like real fireplace, and if you get the steel wool type cinders to cover the gas fittings, they even look like glowing red coals.

Gas is nice (we have one in our townhouse) but I wish we would have thought about having a blower installed with it as well.

The heat doesn't circulate throughout the living room quite so well; so I'd recommend choosing a fireplace with a blower as well.

And do not forget the CO detector when you have a fireplace!
