I have been saving for over two years for a laptop. Finally I bought one about a month ago.
Do my parents have the right to tell me I can't have full control over something I purchased?
Or say I can't use it for a week?
Is there like some issue with that?
Because I have it and I can not use it regularly because I can't update my iPod, play a game, or go on myspace.

All together...
Do my parents have the right to tell me I can't use what I bought?
And can't I use it whenever for whatever I want?

How old are you? Don't forget they pay for your food, clothes, shelter and everything else.

OK, try looking at it another way. I am assuming that you are a juvenile, living under your parents' roof, and not contributing at all to the costs of the household. That would mean you are getting your board, lodging and food all provided. Mother does your laundry, and your parents pay for all your clothes and other general stuff. It's part of being a juvenile, and you are going to have a long long time in the future to be out there on your own, but for now, you have to play by the rules of the house.

Also, as a juvenile, your parents have certain obligations under the Law to be responsible for you and keep you safe. There are a lot of bad, and potentially dangerous places on the Internet, and besides being a legal obligation, it's also the moral duty of any caring parent to try and protect the child from these risky elements. What if you had saved up your money and bought a shotgun. I know that if you were my kid I would put some very serious limitations on when, where, and for what purpose you used it.

It's more than likely you'll have some kids of your own one day, and I am sure the time will come when you'll be in the same situation yourself of needing to put restrictions on them to protect them from certain things you know they aren't yet ready to handle on their own. Oh, they are going to think they can, of course, because they are sure they can handle anything. But YOU, as the parent, have been around the world a lot longer so you'll know they're wrong about that, and in spite of their protests, you'll set the rules and make them comply.

I suggest you have a good polite, friendly conversation with your parents, explain to them what it is you want to do with your computer that their restrictions are preventing you doing, and ask if y'all can work out some kind of a compromise where they get what they want (some control over where you go and what you do on the internet), but you get what you want, which is to be able to do certain things that you can convince them are absolutely OK and harmless. Compromise is something you will have to be doing a lot of in your future adult life, so it's never too early to start practising.

Legally your not allowed to own anything until your 18. I know that's not right, considering you can go to big boy prison at 17, and you can drive at 16 and have a job at 15, but it's true. Sorry, hopefully you'll be 18 soon enough. Hang in there. I didn't like the rules when I was a minor either, but now I understand some of them now that I have kids, not that rule though.

Well your age is important here. If you're 18 or over, you should have full control over the laptop. If you're under 18, your parents have the right to express their concerns but still, if you bought the laptop with their permission they should be fine with it ......
Just have a talk with your parents, sit down and have a civil discussion; reach an agreement, and explain why you should have your rights.

Hope this helps! :)

It's their electricity their house their rules. Did they give you the money for it through pocket money? Or did you just work jobs from other people to save up for it? If you got jobs off other people then yeah it is yours completely. But if it's mainly from pocket money and stuff then they've got a right to say how you spend the money they gave you.

Until you are 18 and out of their house they make the rules and they are only doing it for your own good.

Good for you though for saving up for the laptop. I know that took alot of sacraficing and hardwork.

Good luck!

If you are a minor in your parents' home, you do not have the right to do what you want, when you want.

If you want that right, you need to pay for your own place to live, including food, utilities, transportation, insurance, TV, furniture, clothes, etc...

Welcome to the real world, honey!

Do they pay for the internet? If so, then they can ban you from the internet. Now can they ban you from playing FreeCell? Nah, I think you're good with that. But whatever they pay for, they can take away from you.
