It's about the drug-fueled merry-go-round of the California rock scene of the 70's which of course all the Eagles were in up to their eyebrows. It's pure Don Henley and is a perfect precursor to the Eagle's other bitter, angry story-type songs like "Life in the Fast Lane" and his solo ones like "Boys of Summer" and "Dirty Laundry". Don Henley is all about bitter and angry, or used to be supposedly till he got married. He even wrote a song about that called "Everything is Different Now". Don Henley can't go to the bathroom without writing a song about it.

At the Snopes link, pay attention to the excerpt of an interview with Don Henley where he describes their thoughts on writing the song.
Hell and the devil my fanny - that is so idiotic.

It's about a guy falling asleep while driving and ending up in this Hotel California with pleasantness untill he realizes that he can't escape that place where there's beasts and fear and realizes that H ot el Ca l ifornia is infact Hell, like a broken neon sign with lights turning off to read Hell.
I do love the guitar music...and it just reminds me of how grateful I am for being saved.

Yes, excellent song, but I've never thought of the deeper meaning. You can check in but you can never leave - such a lovely place. Sounds like the rich mans heaven/hell.

According to the band itself, it's about the hedonism and creed in america and the music industry in particular.

some christians are so pathetic... someone writes a really awesome song that warns against 'worldliness' from a first hand perspective and they claim it is entirely from the devil!

That is so pathetic to stop listening to a good song just because it's about hell. Your bible has alot to do with hell but you still read that.

I found out it was about hell......
Didn't realize that after I had gotten saved........so I try not to listen to it anymore when it comes on the radio
Edit:
The bible warns us about hell....and about "coming out from among them"...........not to be like the world.....but to be Christ-like. It's not pathetic to stop listening to rock music......it's a change of heart brought about by the indwelling Holy Spirit of God
